Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a keen follower of the game of cricket, and he inaugurated six indoor cricket academies in northeast India on Tuesday. It is a part of the BCCI initiative, which is aimed at the development of the sport in the region.
Madankurklang (Meghalaya), Aizawl (Mizoram), Rangpo (Sikkim), Doimukh (Arunachal Pradesh), Imphal (Manipur) and Dimapur (Nagaland) are the places where these academies are located.
"The Honourable Prime Minister virtually inaugurated the facilities during a state function in Gangtok, Sikkim, marking a significant step towards strengthening sports infrastructure and unlocking the immense sporting potential of the North-East region," the BCCI stated in a release.
ICC chairman Jay Shah and the officials of the BCCI also attended the ceremony.
"The project was started by the BCCI under the guidance of Jay Shah when he was the secretary of the board. Jay Shah laid the foundation stones of the project in 2024," the BCCI added.
The academies have indoor practice tracks, gyms, swimming pools and training blocks. These facilities will help in training during the monsoon season, helping the players to remain in their regions.
"We want to take cricket infrastructure to every region of the country," BCCI president Mithun Manhas said.
"It is a big step in ensuring that cricketers from the North-East have access to quality facilities like players from other parts of the country. This will pave the way for players from the North-East to compete at the highest levels," BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said.
"The focus will be on providing exposure to the players of this region," BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla said.
