In a significant move aimed at expanding its presence in global sports, Saudi Arabia has officially entered the world of cricket by forming a strategic alliance with the International League T20 (ILT20).
This partnership, signed between the Saudi Arabian Cricket Federation (SACF) and the DP World ILT20 — a prominent franchise-based league sanctioned by the Emirates Cricket Board — marks the Kingdom’s first major step into professional cricket.
The initiative aligns with Saudi Arabia’s broader sports diversification strategy, aiming to build a sustainable cricket ecosystem, develop local talent, and attract international attention.
One of the major highlights of the agreement is the direct inclusion of Saudi players in ILT20 squads. Under the new framework, each of the six franchises participating in the league will be required to include at least one Saudi cricketer. This policy is designed to fast-track the development of homegrown players by exposing them to world-class competition and infrastructure.
Furthermore, future editions of the league will see some matches hosted in Saudi Arabia, an unprecedented step that will not only enhance local engagement with the sport but also accelerate the establishment of cricketing infrastructure in the country. Officials believe that these changes will play a crucial role in nurturing a new generation of Saudi cricketers and providing them with a global platform.
The partnership also reflects Saudi Arabia’s ambition to become a central hub for sports and entertainment in the Gulf region. Khalid Al Zarooni, Chairman of ILT20, emphasized that Saudi Arabia’s entry is vital to the growth of cricket across the Middle East, as it opens up new markets and fan bases. Prince Saud Bin Mishal Al-Saud, Chairman of SACF, echoed this sentiment, highlighting how the collaboration could boost tourism, infrastructure development, and global fan engagement.
The upcoming fourth edition of ILT20, scheduled from December 2, 2025, to January 4, 2026, will feature 34 matches and is expected to showcase the early results of this new alliance. As Saudi Arabia continues to invest heavily in sports, this cricket partnership signals a long-term commitment to integrating the Kingdom into the global sporting landscape.
