Indian red-ball skipper Shubman Gill took a playful swipe at an English journalist, afte a historic 336-run victory over England, at Edgbaston. The 25-year-old batter savagely asked for his ‘favorite journalist’ durng the post-match press conference.

The last five days were a delight for Indian cricket fans, who witnessed Indian captain Shubman Gill at his best, both with the bat as well as in the leadership role. He guided the team to a much-needed win over the Three Lions at the Edgbaston in Birmingham, thereby allowing India to bounce back after having suffered from the opening defeat in Leeds. The win also marked Gill’s first victory as India’s Test captain.

Shubman Gill eloquently led from the front with the bat, scoring a record-breaking 269 runs in the first innings, and followed it up with another 161-run knock in the second innings. As a result of his impressive batting displa and vital contributions from the other batters, India put up a massive 608-run target for England. The home side failed to chase it down, with the Indian pace duo of Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep shining with the ball.

However, the odds were heavily stacked against Shubman Gill and India heading into the Edgbaston Test, after the team lost the series opener at Headingly by six wickets. India’s defeat in Leeds was particularly frustrating because, despite scoring over 800 runs across both innings, the Men in Blue failed to secure a win as England aggressively chased down a 371-run target in the fourth innings.

On the eve of the second Test, another stat that was pointed out to captain Shubman Gill at the pre-match press conference was that the Men in Blue had not won a Test match in Birmingham in their last nine attempts, with the last victory coming in 1966. This particular statistic was brought up by a British journalist, who Gill playfully troled, while speaking after turning the odds in his favour at the post-match press conference.

I can’t see my favourite journalist. Where is he? I wanted to see him. – Shubman Gill’s playful jibe at the press conference (H/T India Today)

With a friendly grin, the Indian red-ball captain inquired about the whereabouts of his ‘favorite’ journalist. Gill later on, went on to disregard the history of India’s performances in England as well as the numbers, asserting that the current Indian team is the ‘best’ one and that it possesses the capability to defeat England and win the series. He further stated that if the team kept performing at the same level and made the right decisions, the 2025 tour would be one to remember for ages.

I even said before the Test match that I don’t really believe in history and stats… I believe we are the best team to have come here in England, and we have the capability to beat them, to win the series from here.

Furthermore, the Indian captain also hailed the relatively inexperienced pace attack that India fielded in the second Test at Edgbaston. He emphatically stated that the pacer, including Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep and Prasidh Krishna delivered under pressure and made the difference.

‘Learn from Shubman Gill’: Michael Vaughan Tells Inconsistent England Opener Zak Crawley

Former England captain Michael Vaughan urged opener Zak Crawley to learn from India’s Shubman Gill, following his inconsistent displays in the first and second Test, in the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Crawley has only scored 88 runs in his four innings so far, at a poor average of just 22.

Vaughan described Crawley as the ‘luckiest player’ for having made 55 Test appearances, given his meager return of only five centuries. He lambasted the 27-year-old for his poor form and advised him to take a page out of Shubman Gill’s book. Vaughan cited Gill’s technical adjustments as an example of how he’s managed to score over 500 runs in the India-England series so far.

There have been many players who have frustrated fans over the years, but he [Zak Crawley] is right up there as the most frustrating… But, it is possible to change. Look at Shubman Gill. – Michael Vaughan on England opener Zak Crawley (H/T The Hindu)

Zak Crawley’s only significant contribution till now has been a 65-run innings in the second innings in Leeds. Concerns are growing that he might lose his spot in the playing XI, especially with Jacob Bethell waiting in the ranks to replace the out-of-form opener.
