Team India’s opener Shubman Gill was dismissed for just five runs after being bowled by a brilliant inswinging delivery from left-arm pacer Shah Faisal during the group stage match against Oman at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Friday, September 19. Having chosen to bat first, India were eyeing a flying start from their new opening duo of Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill.

The Indian vice-captain opened his account with a boundary off left-arm spinner Shakeel Ahmed in the first over before facing Shah Faisal. Using the help from the fresh pitch, the new ball, and the breeze across the field, Faisal found early movement. Shubman Gill, after playing out the first few balls, was beaten by a full delivery that came back in sharply.

Shubman Gill attempted to drive the ball straight down the ground, but the late inward movement caused it to slip through the gap between his bat and pad, crashing into the off-stump and knocking it out of the ground. You can watch the dismissal video here:

The opener had also been deceived in the group stage match against Pakistan. On that occasion, he fell to a smart delivery from Saim Ayub that lured him out of the crease, leading to a stumping by the wicketkeeper after he had scored 10 runs.

Abhishek Sharma And Sanju Samson Steady India After Gill’s Dismissal vs OMA

The Men in Blue have quickly bounced back from the early blow, with Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson counter-attacking the Oman bowlers. Samson, promoted to No. 3 after not getting a chance to bat in the first two games, is playing a supporting role while Sharma takes the aggressive route at the other end.

At present, India are cruising at 49/1 after five overs, with Sharma blazing away on 31 off just 11 balls, while Samson is looking to find his rhythm as the powerplay nears its end.
