Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli are expected to team up again for the India vs Sri Lanka ODI series in Colombo next month. Their past conflicts did raise eyebrows when Gambhir was appointed as the new head coach of the Indian men’s team earlier this month. However, Kohli convinced the BCCI that he could bury the old battles for a healthy working relationship with Gambhir.
In an interview, Gambhir spoke about their relationship. He explained that both share a common goal of working hard for the Indian team and winning trophies for them. Virat Kohli responded positively by making himself available for the ODI series against Sri Lanka from August 3 to 7 in Colombo. Apart from Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah, Kohli had initially requested a longer break following their triumph in the T20 World Cup; however, at Gambhir’s request, he and Sharma made themselves available. The latter, Bumrah, has, though, remained unavailable due to workload management. Reports emerged that Kohli had told the BCCI that he was ready to bury past conflicts and look towards bigger things for Indian cricket. On the eve of the Indian team’s departure for Pallekele for a three-match T20I series, starting July 27, Gambhir was asked about his equation with Kohli. He explained that it was his personal affair. He asserts that while on the field, everybody fights for the team, but they are all united to make India proud. The last Kohli-Gambhir clash took place at Ekana Stadium in Lucknow during the IPL match. A year after the incident, both got patched up, and Gambhir was seen hugging Kohli in an IPL match. Kohli later spoke about the incident at a PUMA event. While speaking about trolls, he mentioned how their patch-up disappointed them desperately, eyeing drama. Also, they are not children anymore and those things have been left behind.
