India’s T20 leadership equation for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics has come under early scrutiny, with Suryakumar Yadav facing questions over consistency despite leading the side to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 title. A report by Press Trust of India indicates that his recent dip in batting returns has prompted internal discussions about his long-term role in the format.
The upcoming tour of the United Kingdom is expected to be a decisive phase. India are scheduled to play T20Is against Ireland and England, and the focus, as per the report, will be less on leadership credentials and more on individual output.
With major events like the 2028 Olympics and the next T20 World Cup cycle approaching, selection decisions are likely to hinge on measurable performance indicators rather than past achievements. PTI quoted a source saying,
“Obviously Surya is now leading the team. But he also has to ensure that as a batter, he maintains a level of consistency in his performances. Obviously, he will lead in the UK, but after that, discussions going forward till 2028 could be purely performance-based."

Statistical trends underline the concern. Suryakumar, currently among India’s leading T20I run-scorers, went through 2025 without registering a single half-century across 21 matches.
Although he showed signs of recovery in early 2026 with three fifties in a series against New Zealand and an unbeaten 84 in a World Cup fixture against the United States, the inconsistency returned in subsequent matches.
Selectors are simultaneously tracking emerging options. The rise of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has added another dimension to squad planning. The teenager has been included among 35 T20 specialists shortlisted for visa processing ahead of the Ireland leg, reflecting administrative preparation and selection flexibility. The source said,
“The selectors were asked by the BCCI logistics department to give at least 35 names whose Irish visa needed to be kept sorted. Since the Indian team’s first port of entry will be Ireland and not England, the UK visa won’t work. Everyone requires a separate Irish visa."
Competition for batting slots remains dense. Established names like Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, and Ishan Kishan continue to present strong cases, while Yashasvi Jaiswal adds further depth. The source stated,
“The selection committee is convinced that Vaibhav is ready, but then you are talking about Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan. All three are half centurions in the T20 World Cup final.
“If you take a fourth opener, then Yashasvi Jaiswal is also there.
“Vaibhav is ready, but national selectors need to give very good reasons to drop Abhishek or Sanju. Because if you drop either one, the question arises, ‘How is Surya keeping his place?’
The source added,
“It could be the UK tour or Zimbabwe. But the best platform could be the Asian Games or the West Indies home series, as these two are overlapping, so there will be two T20 squads.
“Vaibhav will play one of the two, if not earlier."
