Gerwyn Price has given a remarkable insight into the mindgames Peter Wright deployed prior to their heated semifinal at the 2020 PDC World Darts Championship.
'The Iceman' twice reached the last four at the iconic Ally Pally, even taking the world title in 2021. But it was the year before that tensions between Price and Wright really ran high.
In that particular semifinal, Wright prevailed with a 6-3 victory, qualifying for the final against Michael van Gerwen. There, the Scot took his first world title.
Now Price reveals that even before entering the stage, Wright tried to pull him out of his concentration, the former rugby player revealed in an interview with talkSPORT.
“I can remember playing in a World Championship semi-final, I’m not sure what year it was, but it was Peter Wright. Even when we left the hotel, he raced me to the venue in his car. Not speeding but took a certain route that he wanted to get there before me.
“When I did turn up, he’s like, ‘Well, what took you so long? Going to be the same on the board?’ Then he won the first set and tried to give it to me — and I was fuming. He really did get in my head.”
Price's frustration was so high that he refused to shake Wright's hand after the match. Soon after, he expressed his dissatisfaction on social media. "A little fooling around is fine, but not when players are fully focused and trying to do their job, especially after I just lost the first set. I was disappointed in what Peter did and felt it was inappropriate given the circumstances."
Not much later, however, Price came out with another response, apologizing. “Banter is acceptable but not when players are fully focused trying to do a job, having just bombed the first set.
“I was upset with what Peter did and think it was out of order considering the circumstances.”
