'Going to be like naughty school children': Analysts see Humphries-Littler World Cup of Darts dynamic as near unbeatable

The World Cup of Darts gets underway next Thursday in Frankfurt. England starts this tournament as the defending champion and is also the top favorite to succeed themselves on the honor roll.

The only change from last year is that Luke Littler will replace Michael Smith. Number one in the world and fresh winner of the Premier League Darts, Luke Humphries, of course remains on board the England team as their captain.

Among bookmakers, therefore, England is top favorite to win the World Cup of Darts again, and among fans, too, there are few who doubt another run from England. "The dominance they've shown in the last couple of years now unbelievable. They're impossible not to look past, to me they are the ultimate dream team," said Sky Sports analyst Laura Turner.

"You've got some experience from some other groups as well. But it's one heck of a team."

Dynamics

"It's probably going back to Taylor and Lewis," said Matthew Edgar, former professional darts player. "I'd say maybe even where the dynamic of darts is even better than that because even when we had Taylor and Lewis, we had a lot of rivalries. Taylor maybe starting to come off the top of his game at that period of time. This is two players that are on top of their game but also getting better still."

Edgar therefore sees few if any obstacles to another English world title. "The gap between Littler-Humphries and the rest of the field. That's why they are the favourites. I think everyone is certain England is going to win. But we've been there before."

"Ultimately is anyone going to get past them, is anyone going to beat them. The dynamic they're going to have is going to be great, I think they're going to be like naughty school children getting on together. I think Wales will push them absolutely, I don't think they will get past them."
