Hungarian Darts Trophy: Nathan Aspinall completes superb win in sensational style as Gian van Veen out despite hitting 106 average

Nathan Aspinall and Gian van Veen experienced contrasting fortunes on the opening day of the Hungarian Darts Trophy, with “The Asp” storming through in ruthless fashion while Van Veen bowed out despite producing one of the highest averages of the round.

Aspinall, playing his first match of the tournament, looked in complete control as he brushed aside Hungarian qualifier Levente Sarai 6-0. The World Matchplay finalist barely gave his opponent a chance, winning legs in clinical fashion and showcasing his trademark composure on the outer ring. He completed the win in style hitting a 164 on the bull to end an emphatic display in some style. The Stockport ace will be back tomorrow for more in Budapest.

For Van Veen, however, it was a night of frustration. The Dutch star averaged just under 106 but was punished by the deadly finishing of Germany’s Niko Springer, who hit 75% of his doubles to claim a 6-3 victory.

Van Veen made the ideal start, breaking in 14 darts and then holding throw with a superb 12-darter to race into a 2-0 lead. Springer responded in kind, holding in 17 darts before producing a 15-dart break to wipe out the early deficit. When the German held again to move in front for the first time, the pressure began to mount.

“GVV The Giant” responded with brilliance, landing an 11-darter to level at 3-3. But Springer hit back with a crucial 121 checkout that swung the momentum firmly his way. Van Veen missed a dart at tops to level the match once more, and Springer seized the opportunity, moving 5-3 up before sealing the win on double 16. Despite the loss, Van Veen’s scoring power shone through — though his defeat leaves him still searching for that breakthrough Euro Tour run.

Barney keeps Euros hopes alive as Cullen struggles through

Earlier in the evening, Raymond van Barneveld produced a much-needed victory to keep his European Championship hopes alive. The five-time World Champion delivered a 6-2 success over home qualifier Nandor Major, dominating the opening exchanges and never really looking troubled.

“Barney” opened with a 13-dart break and followed up with another 13-darter to double his advantage. Although he missed chances in the third leg, Major couldn’t capitalise, allowing the Dutchman to move 3-0 ahead. The Hungarian did manage to get on the board with an 83 checkout, but Van Barneveld responded instantly with a 121 finish in 12 darts to stretch clear once more. Major added a second leg, but Van Barneveld remained composed, wrapping up victory with a tidy 76 checkout. His reward is a clash with Dave Chisnall in round two.

France’s Thibault Tricole took down Jermaine Wattimena to dent his Dortmund chances 6-5. The Frenchman raced into a 5-2 lead, only for Wattimena to produce a stirring comeback, firing in legs of 14, 19, and a sensational 10-darter to force a decider. In the last leg, Wattimena missed a dart at double 16 to complete the turnaround, and Tricole held his nerve to pin double 8 and book his place in the next round.

Richard Veenstra did manage to advance, though not without drama. “Flyers” survived missed match darts from Cameron Crabtree before eventually sealing a 6-3 win on double 8. The Dutchman’s highlight was a brilliant 93 checkout for an 11-darter in leg five, though inconsistency on the doubles threatened to derail his progress.

Elsewhere, Robert Owen pulled off one of the shocks of the opening day by defeating Ryan Searle 6-5. The Welshman carved out a 4-2 lead only to be pegged back, but in the deciding leg he held his nerve to complete the upset.

Former World Grand Prix champion Daryl Gurney also enjoyed a strong start, easing to a 6-1 victory over Leon Weber after reeling off five consecutive legs. He did so in some style as he took out a breathtaking 140 checkout to claim it. While Joe Cullen was forced all the way in his battle with Lukas Wenig, squandering a 4-2 advantage before eventually surviving match darts to edge through 6-5.
