'If England are there, we can knock them off' - Fighting talk from Gerwyn Price with don't write Wales off message

Gerwyn Price delivered a clear message to defending champion England: don't underestimate Wales at the World Cup of Darts.

'The Iceman' is once again teaming with Jonny Clayton in Frankfurt, where the Welsh duo will hunt for a third world title after previous wins in 2020 and 2023. As the second-seeded nation, they will be in action in the second round on Saturday.

England are considered towering favorites with current world number one Luke Humphries and his closest rival, number two Luke Littler. But Price firmly believes in Wales' chances.

He said, “Obviously England are favourites.

“The two Lukes are number one and number two in the world. But me and Jonny on our day, if we play our game like we have and normally do in the World Cup, we can make our way to the final. And if England are there, we can knock them off.”

Top form

Price travels to Germany in excellent form. He already won three Pro Tour titles this year and won three nights in the Premier League Darts. In the end, he finished fourth in the table and lost 10-7 to Littler in the semifinals of the playoffs at the O2 Arena.

A crucial moment in that match was a missed opportunity on a 100-finish, with Price overshooting the score and possibly costing himself the match. Still, he looks back on his campaign with satisfaction.

“I think my Premier League was pretty decent overall," said Price. "I’m a little bit up and down. I won a couple of nights.

“There was a couple of nights where I was losing consistently first game, I think five nights on the bounce which did not help. But when the pressure was on I came back.

“The semi-final on finals night I slipped up and let that get away from me. A couple of times in the game I could have kept myself two legs in front.

“The 100 checkout that I bust probably cost me the match and it was very frustrating. It’s timely moments you need to take and I didn’t take them.”
