Stephen Bunting declared himself in the form of his career after powering to the 2025 Swiss Darts Trophy title in Basel on Sunday night. The Bullet produced a stunning set of displays on Finals Day, averaging more than 100 in all four of his matches, and capped it off with an 8-3 victory over Luke Woodhouse in the final.
Bunting had already beaten Raymond van Barneveld and Gian van Veen on his way to the final on Sunday evening, while Woodhouse came through Ryan Searle and Cor Dekker. The first leg of the final went to Woodhouse after both players missed doubles, but once Bunting found his range he took charge. A clinical double 18 break moved him ahead at 2-1 and he never looked back, punishing missed chances from his opponent with a string of heavy scoring and ruthless finishing.
A 110 checkout for a double break gave him clear daylight at 5-2, and though Woodhouse briefly stopped the rot, Bunting’s superior power proved too much. A superb 177 setup shot in the tenth leg underlined his dominance before he sealed the title with an 83 finish.
“There’s a lot of hard work that goes on behind the scenes,” said Bunting afterwards. “I’m playing the best darts of my life. I feel consistently that I'm delivering. I'm so happy with this win, it means a lot.”
The world number four was quick to praise his beaten opponent too. “Luke’s had a fantastic week, there’s no better time to be playing your best darts. This will give him a lot of confidence going into future tournaments.”
For Bunting, victory in Basel underlined both his current form and his standing at the top of the game. “I’m number four in the world. The rankings are over a few years so it shows how consistent I’ve been, but you can’t take anything for granted in this game,” he explained.
“There’s so many good players in this world and to be in the top four in the world is an unbelievable achievement. I can’t take my foot off the gas, I need to keep on the practice board and keep improving. Hopefully there’s a big tournament coming soon.”
Basel belonged to Bunting, who added another European Tour title to his growing collection with a blistering Finals Day performance. Averaging over 100 in every match, he underlined why he is sitting inside the world’s top four and why he’ll be a threat at every major on the calendar. With confidence surging and a clear focus on improvement, The Bullet has all the tools to make 2025 his biggest year yet.
