For the first time in history, Northern Ireland have won the World Cup of Darts. Josh Rock and Daryl Gurney have edged Welsh pair Jonny Clayton and Gerwyn Price 10-9 to win a thrilling final!
The Northern Irish duo flew out of the blocks just as they had in their semifinal earlier in the evening, racing into a 2-1 lead with confident early scoring. Their dominance continued in the fourth leg as they broke the Welsh throw again, putting Gerwyn Price and Jonny Clayton under real pressure.
But the turning point seemed to come in leg five, when Northern Ireland missed two darts for a commanding 4-1 lead. Wales took full advantage, halving the deficit and swinging the momentum in their favour. A sensational 142 checkout brought the match level at 3-3, and although Gurney and Rock regrouped to edge back ahead at 4-3, Price responded immediately with a clinical 88 finish to make it 4-4.
Wales began to assert themselves as Clayton and Price clicked into gear, taking the next leg to move in front for the first time at 5-4. But Northern Ireland snatched the tenth leg before the interval to go in level at 5-5.
After the break, Wales once again started the stronger, edging back in front at 6-5 and then stretching their lead to 7-5 with another confident hold. It appeared they might be replicating their semifinal surge, but leg 13 brought huge drama.
Northern Ireland had missed several darts for a crucial hold, only for Wales to pass up their own chances to move 8-5 in front. Eventually, Gurney held his nerve to take the leg, and Rock followed with a tidy double 18 to square the match at 7-7.
Suddenly, it was all Northern Ireland. Three straight legs saw them pull clear, with Rock landing double 14 to move within one of victory at 9-7. However, Wales weren’t done yet.
They dug deep to hold in leg 17 and then capitalised on four missed match darts from the Northern Irish in the next leg to force a dramatic decider.
But in the end, Gurney and Rock had just enough left in the tank. With everything on the line, they held their throw to seal a 10-9 triumph and lift the World Cup trophy for Northern Ireland for the first time.
