Dimitri Van den Bergh returned to the World Cup of Darts after a short break, but his comeback ended in disappointment. Together with his compatriot Mike De Decker, the Belgian was eliminated in the group stage. Afterwards, "The Dreammaker" indicated that he wants to take it easy in the coming months and the future, with fewer tournaments on the schedule. That approach does not meet with much understanding from Vincent van der Voort.
In Sportnieuws.nl's podcast Darts Draait Door, the former Dutch pro darter speaks out clearly about Van den Bergh's situation. "In itself he is right, only it works differently in practice," Van der Voort said.
"Your ranking determines how much you play. You can't just withdraw. If you are in those places in the world ranking where Van den Bergh is, you just have to play everything. Only when he starts doing well again on TV, you can go back to a bit of self-determination."
The reality for Van den Bergh is that he currently has to work hard to maintain his position in the PDC Order of Merit. The Belgian is in danger of falling on the PDC Order of Merit and that makes his participation in important tournaments in the future far from a foregone conclusion.
"He will first have to play everything now to get back to the top of the ProTour Order of Merit. Then you automatically enter Euro Tours next year and only after that can he say he is skipping some other tournaments."
According to Van der Voort, Van den Bergh currently simply lacks the luxury of being selective in his schedule. "He is not at all in that position now to want to play fewer tournaments," he said.
After Belgium's elimination in the group stage of the World Cup, Van der Voort and Van den Bergh spoke personally. The Dutchman understands somewhere that the Belgian is looking for change.
"He indicated that things have to be different with him and I understand that. Don't forget how much you're away from home. And can you still bear to have to give up everything every time?"'' Van der Voort said.
