'The Triple Crown doesn’t exist, but if it did the Premier League can’t be part of it' – Matt Edgar weighs in on controversial PDC debate

Former PDC Tour Card holder turned pundit Matt Edgar has offered his verdict on one of the sport’s most talked-about topics in recent months — the so-called “Triple Crown” of darts — and insists it’s a fan-driven concept that, as things stand, doesn’t actually exist.

Speaking on his EdgarTV YouTube channel, Edgar addressed growing speculation fuelled by the success of Luke Littler and Luke Humphries, both of whom have claimed major titles in the past year, including the World Championship and World Matchplay.

“It’s not a thing”

“What is the darts Triple Crown? Does anybody have it? Is it even a thing? Well, no — is the answer to that,” Edgar said. “It’s not really a narrative. I’ve been on the Sky Sports podcast where they’ve flat-out said it’s not something pushed by Sky, it’s not something heavily promoted."

“It’s now something the players — Littler and Humphries — are talking about, and I believe Wayne Mardle has spoken about it before. We, as viewers, understand the idea, but if there’s going to be a Triple Crown, it needs to be addressed by the PDC and officially defined, ideally with some sort of physical reward.”

Why the Premier League doesn’t fit

Edgar believes that if the Triple Crown were ever formalised, it should consist solely of major ranking events — which rules the Premier League out. “For me, it needs to be three big ranking events. That’s why you can’t include the Premier League,” he argued. “It’s not ranked, it’s invitational, and it’s not based on a set criteria."

“It’s not simply ‘take the top four in the world, then add the major winners’. Sometimes players get in because of their walk-on, their personality, or because they’re from a country the PDC wants to promote. There have been political conversations around it for years," Edgar adds. “Yes, it’s eight of the world’s best playing each week, but that doesn’t make it part of a ranking Triple Crown.”

Edgar’s version of the Triple Crown

In Edgar’s eyes, three tournaments stand out above the rest. “If there is going to be a Triple Crown, it needs to be the World Championship — of course — especially now with the £1 million prize fund. Then the World Matchplay, the second-biggest ranking event in the sport, with huge prestige and history."

"The third for me is the World Grand Prix. That might surprise some people, but it’s a week-long tournament and it’s a completely different test — double-start, double-finish — compared to set play at the Worlds and leg play at the Matchplay,” he claims.

All three, he noted, are week-long majors, carry “World” in the title, and offer distinct formats. That mix, he argues, makes them the most fitting candidates.

The need for official recognition

Edgar also pointed to a little-known clause in the PDC player contract preventing Tour Card holders from competing in any tournament with “World” in the title that isn’t run by the PDC — a quirk that helps frame why these particular events stand out. But he is adamant that until the PDC formally recognises the concept, the Triple Crown is just talk.

“Every tournament was made up at some point,” Edgar said. “The World Cup was made up. The World Championship was made up. Things grow into what they are now. I think the Triple Crown could become something — but right now it’s fan-driven speculation. If the PDC got behind it, they could add a prize — £100,000, £50,000, a gold dart, a special badge, a plaque — something tangible. That way, if someone says, ‘I’m the Triple Crown winner’, they can prove it.”

Until then, Edgar says, it remains nothing more than an interesting talking point.
