'You’ll be able to see why I referee!' – Huw Ware takes on darts marathon for charity

On Saturday 1 November, Rileys in Cardiff will stage a darts challenge with a difference. This won’t be a league night or a televised tournament, but a twelve-hour marathon in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

The man at the centre of it is one of the sport’s most familiar figures. Referee Huw Ware, usually found behind the microphone calling the scores, will swap his trademark steady voice for a set of darts and step up to the oche himself. “Normally you’ll find me behind the mic as a darts referee,” Ware explained in his fundraiser. “But this time I’ll be stepping up to the oche myself for a marathon challenge... so you’ll be able to see why I referee!”

The event runs from 9am until 9pm and is part of the Macmillan Darts Marathon, with Ware aiming to raise as much money as possible for the charity. For many families, Macmillan is a vital source of medical and emotional support, and their work is only possible thanks to fundraising efforts like this. “You can donate online to support,” Ware said, “or even better, come down on the day, throw some darts with me, and donate in person. Every bit helps Macmillan continue their incredible work for people living with cancer.”

A familiar face in darts

Ware has long been a trusted presence on the oche. He made his refereeing debut at the BDO in 2010, becoming the youngest official ever to take charge on a World Championship stage, and since then his calm manner and clear delivery have made him a popular figure with both players and fans.

That he is now leaving his comfort zone to play underlines the significance of the cause. This isn’t about chasing averages or winning legs – it’s about using his profile to support a charity close to so many lives.

A day to remember

Ware is hoping the marathon will leave a mark on everyone who takes part or contributes. “Thank you very much for your support – let’s make it a day to remember!” he added.

With his enthusiasm and determination, Huw Ware is showing that darts is more than just a competition. It is a community – one where referees, players and fans alike can come together to make a difference.
