The John Wick universe’s expansion into spinoff territory has admittedly been underwhelming so far. The Peacock series centering around the Continental back in the ’70s garnered little to no buzz. And, Ballerina didn’t land well commercially nor critically and underperformed at the box office. But there are plans for yet another John Wick spinoff because there’s apparently a script ready for a samurai Western set in this universe.
This news came during a Variety article about up-and-coming writers, which included Austin Everett, who casually mentioned penning the script. Well, that’s interesting. He said that he couldn’t say anything else, and that makes sense. This is a rather interesting premise that could go many, many years back into the past. But, does the John Wick universe really have appeal when Keanu Reeves is not the primary face of a project? Maybe.
A story about Caine is coming and people seem into that. And, fans would still be down for a project featuring Halle Berry’s Sofia. But those characters really resonated with fans in a specific way. A story completely removed from the journey of John Wick may not be the way, even if the concept of a Western samurai story. We will see what happens with this.
