Actors and actresses with famous daughters

Many people get into the family line of work. Show business is no different. Many performers have seen their kid, or kids, follow them into the world of acting. Others take a slightly different route but still find fame. While we’ve mostly focused on the acting progeny of noted actors, we also have included a couple of other kids who found fame and success in different mediums. And we’ve decided to focus entirely on daughters. Perhaps we will give sons their day in the, um, sun another time. Children with two parents who are actors are put into a single entry for the sake of ease. And now let’s meet the parents of some of our favorite famous ladies!

We will not go into the, shall we say, complicated history of Griffith and Johnson’s relationship. Let’s instead focus on the complicated relationship at the heart of the movies that made their daughter famous. We’re talking about Dakota Johnson, who you may remember from the (terrible) movies based on the “Fifty Shades of Gray” books. Speaking of Griffith…

Tippi Hedren

She is part of a lineage of acting women as well! Griffith’s mom is Hedren, who you may remember from a couple of Alfred Hitchcock movies. Her most famous role is in “The Birds,” where Hedren, an animal lover, is ironically attacked by our avian friends.

Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis

Curtis was one of the biggest stars of his era. Leigh, speaking of Hitchcock, starred in one of the mos -iconic scenes in movie history. We’re talking about the shower scene from “Psycho.” Together they joined forces to bring us another horror movie legend in Jamie Lee Curtis. Michael Myers never stabbed her in a shower!

Demi Moore and Bruce Willis

Moore famously romanced a ghost in, well, “Ghost.” Willis played a ghost in “The Sixth Sense.” Somehow, they couldn’t make it work long term. They did have children together, though, including Rumer Willis. She’s done some acting and also won a season of “Dancing With the Stars” and appeared on “The Masked Singer.”

Lea Thompson

Zoey Deutch’s star is on the rise. We need to keep an eye on her because she’s going to be quite famous soon. You may have seen her in “Zombieland: Double Tap” recently or the Netflix show “The Politician.” You’ve definitely seen her mom, though, thanks to her role in one of the biggest films ever. We’re talking about “Howard the Duck.” Or maybe you saw her in “Back to the Future” instead.

Lisa Bonet

Lenny Kravitz isn’t an actor, but he is famous, so we’ll give him a shoutout here as well. Bonet’s daughter is Zoe Kravitz, who is another rising actor. She starred in the Hulu adaptation of the movie “High Fidelity” in the role made famous by John Cusack. You know who Cusack romanced in that movie? Lisa Bonet. We’ve come weirdly full circle.

Goldie Hawn

Goldie Hawn has an Oscar and several iconic performances. Not too shabby for a woman who got her start playing a ditz in a bikini on “Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In.” She has a famous son named Wyatt Russell, with Kurt Russell, but before Goldie and Kurt got together Hawn had a daughter with a different gentleman. That daughter is Kate Hudson, the former romantic comedy queen. She personally considers Russell her de facto dad, which gives her something in common with Star Lord.

Meryl Streep

Streep has a ton of Oscars and even more nominations, so leave it to her to have not one but two daughters who act. They use the last name of Streep’s husband, Don Gummer, so you may not be aware of this fact. Mamie Gummer was the star of the CW show “Emily Owens, M.D.” Grace Gummer has been in TV shows like “The Newsroom,” “Mr. Robot” and “Extant.”

Peggy Lipton

Lipton and Quincy Jones were both considered quite cool in the ‘70s. You may remember her as one of the stars of “The Mod Squad.” Her daughter has risen to great heights in the world of TV comedy. Rashida Jones has had starring roles in shows like “Parks and Recreation” and the severely underrated work of genius “Angie Tribeca.”

Debbie Reynolds

Reynolds was incredibly famous in her time. She starred in “Singin' in the Rain” after all! And yet her daughter ended up overshadowing her a bit. That’s what happens when your daughter is Carrie Fisher, aka Princess Leia. We sadly lost Fisher before her time, but her legacy lives on. Her daughter, Billie Lourd, has started an acting career of her own.

Ron Howard

From Opie to Richie to being an Oscar-winning director, Howard has had an incredible career. We really just want to give him love for “Arrested Development” though. His daughter is Bryce Dallas Howard, which is fitting given that she’s one of the most famous redheads out there. She’s been in a couple of M. Night Shyamalan movies and also in the blockbuster “Jurassic World” films.

Chris Elliott

Elliott is a cult figure thanks to his appearances on various David Letterman shows, his movie “Cabin Boy” and the profoundly weird TV show “Get a Life.” Now, he's probably best known for Emmy darling "Schitt's Creek." He has two daughters who followed him into showbiz. Abby was a cast member on “Saturday Night Live.” Bridey has done a bit of acting and also has directed some films. Nobody has done anything as weird as “Spewey the Alien” from “Get a Life.”

Susan Sarandon

We don’t need to go over Sarandon’s filmography. She’s a living legend and an Oscar winner. Her daughter, Eva Amurri, looks quite a bit like her. That’s how they played the same character at different ages in the lousy Adam Sandler comedy “That’s My Boy.” Interestingly, Amurri has said she's retired from acting, while Sarandon is still going strong.

Stephen Baldwin

We don’t need to review Baldwin’s filmography either, but this time it’s because we don’t want to bum you out by reminding you of terrible movies. His daughter Hailey isn’t necessarily an actor, but she is famous. She’s done some hosting, including on the TV show “Drop the Mic.” On top of that, you may know her from the fact she’s married to Justin Bieber.

Phoebe Cates and Kevin Kline

Kline may have the Oscar, but Cates got to be in both “Gremlins” movies, so frankly we think she wins the battle of the better career for this couple. They have a couple of kids together, including Greta Kline. You may know her as the fantastic musician who is the frontwoman for the band Frankie Cosmos.

Andie MacDowell

MacDowell started as a model before becoming an actress. Her best-known role would have to be as the love interest in “Groundhog Day.” Now it feels like déjà vu is happening, because her daughter has gone from being a model to an actress as well. Margaret Qualley had a role in “The Leftovers” and made a notable turn as one of the Manson girls in “Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood”

Jon Voight

This is well-worn territory, so we won’t try and make a grand reveal. Angelina Jolie is Voight’s daughter. Everybody knows this. He’s famous and has an Oscar. She’s famous and has an Oscar. Both of them are odd in their own ways. One of them made “Anaconda.” Jolie is the one who is still a star though.

Rob Schneider

Rob Schneider

Having a famous daughter is the rare thing that Schneider has done that doesn't involve Adam Sandler, although it’s quite rewarding for your career to be friends with the Sandman. Schneider’s daughter is not exact a copy of him, so there are no “makin’ copies” jokes to be made. His daughter is the musician Elle King, best known for the song “Ex’s and Oh’s.”

Eric Roberts

Roberts seems to love to work. He purportedly has over 500 credits and has been in critical darlings and also movies made on seemingly no budget. You know his sister, an upstart actress named Julia Roberts, but you also know his daughter Emma mostly from the “American Horror Story” shows and “Scream Queens.” Ryan Murphy loves her.

Kevin Smith

Smith’s acting has mostly involved him not talking — his best-known character is called “Silent Bob” after all — and he’s also a successful director. Admittedly, his daughter owes most of her career to the fact her dad keeps giving her roles. Harley Quinn Smith, yes she’s named after the comic book character, has done almost all her work in Smith’s movies. Hey, she’s only 21. There’s plenty of time left for her to blaze her own path.

John Aniston

Soap opera fans certainly know Aniston. He has played the character Victor Kiriakis on “Days of our Lives” on 2,384 episodes. Yes, that’s not a typo. His daughter is maybe a bit more recognizable though. Maybe you’ve heard of Jennifer Aniston? You may have even had her haircut in the ‘90s.

Sting and Trudie Styler

Sting is most famous as a musician, but he has acted, like when he was in the movie “Dune.” His wife, Styler, is a producer and an actor as well. Together they have a daughter named Mickey Sumner who has been in movies like “Frances Ha” and “Marriage Story.”

Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick

Bacon is such a prolific actor there is a game named after him. Sedgwick has a ton of acting credits herself, including starring in the TV show “The Closer.” Their daughter definitely isn’t quite on their level yet, as Sosie Bacon is just getting started. She’s had roles in TV shows like “13 Reasons Why” and “Here and Now.”

Lindsay Crouse

Crouse almost has a nomination EGOT. She’s been up for an Oscar, a Grammy and an Emmy. For a while, she was together with the famous playwright David Mamet. During that time the two had Zosia Mamet, who was one of the girls from HBO’s “Girls.”

John Drew Barrymore

Barrymore is sometimes seen as more of a conduit in keeping a famous family’s lineage going. After all, his dad, John Barrymore, was one of the iconic actors of his era. The eldest John Barrymore had a couple of famous siblings too in Lionel and Ethel. Lionel has an Oscar, and Ethel was called “The First Lady of American Theater.” You know John Drew’s daughter as well. Obviously, she’s Drew Barrymore. John Drew had several acting roles of his own, though, mostly of the small variety and guest spots on TV shows. Sadly, he had a lot of issues with drugs and alcohol, and after he no-showed a “Star Trek” role he was suspended by SAG and wasn’t able to work for six months. After that he barely worked again, and his life sort of fell apart.
