American Music Awards winners for Artist of the Year, ranked

The 47th annual American Music Awards is set to air on Nov. 24, hosted by Ciara. Although the award show was first implemented in the 1970s, its coveted honor for Artist of the Year didn't come into play until the '90s. Artists such as Katy Perry and Taylor Swift hold the record for the most nominations in the category; however only one of them has won the title multiple times. This year, Swift is facing some steep competition alongside Drake, Ariana Grande, Halsey and Post Malone. In honor of the prestigious award, let's take a look back at some of the past Artist of the Year winners. Where will your favorites rank?

1. Taylor Swift (2013)

The crown for the most wins as Artist of the Year goes to Taylor Swift. Her fourth studio album, "Red," was her last to feature her signature country sound before moving into the pop realm. Playing into her typical album themes on love and heartbreak, the album included singles such as “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” and “I Knew You Were Trouble.” If her past wins are any inclination of her current nominations, Swift would be a top favorite to gain the title for the fifth time at this year's event where she also will be honored as Artist of the Decade.
