The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is notorious for throwing curveballs with its annual Oscar nominations, but this year was shockingly devoid of surprises. All you have to do is look at the nine Best Picture nominations: "Ford vs. Ferrari," "The Irishman," "Jojo Rabbit," "Joker," "Little Women," "Marriage Story," "1917," "Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood" and "Parasite." Not a stunner in the bunch. And with the exception of the infuriatingly anodyne "Jojo Rabbit" and the quite-good-but-not-great "Joker," it's one of the strongest collections of Best Picture nominees in a long time.
