Gary Busey has been a bit of a punchline for a while. In fact, people seem to mostly view him as a “crazy guy” more than an actor. However, Busey has been acting since the ‘70s — and not without some degree of talent. If we set aside Busey the personality and focus on Busey the actor, there are some memorable roles worth talking about.
"The Buddy Holly Story" (1978)
In 1978, Busey was still a young actor with barely any credits to his name. Then, he got cast as Buddy Holly, the famed singer who died tragically in a plane crash. Busey didn’t just play Holly, he also actually sang in the film. His performance got him an Oscar nomination. Busey was never able to really reach this height in his career again.
"Straight Time" (1978)
“Straight Time” has an incredible cast. Busey isn’t the star, but he has an important role in the movie as a friend of the main character, played by Dustin Hoffman. Hoffman plays a thief recently released from prison who is struggling to go straight. In addition to Hoffman and Busey, M. Emmet Walsh, Harry Dean Stanton and Kathy Bates are in the film.
"Barbarosa" (1982)
Unfortunately, “Barbarosa” has been largely forgotten. However, at the time it was a critically acclaimed western. Pauline Kael liked it, and Siskel and Ebert featured it on an episode of their show about overlooked sleepers. Busey stars alongside Willie Nelson. Yes, the singer. That being said, Nelson surprised with his acting chops, but having Busey alongside him to shoulder the load certainly helped.
"Lethal Weapon" (1987)
“Lethal Weapon” made quite the impact on the film industry — and not just because it started Shane Black’s career and helped turn Mel Gibson into a movie star. After all, they eventually made three sequels and a TV show based on this story of mismatched cops. Busey has a memorable role as the main henchman of the villain. In fact, though he’s a henchman, he’s actually the one who gets to have the final fight scene, which is pretty wild and over the top, but a lot of fun.
"Point Break" (1991)
Speaking of inane, over the top and a lot of fun, “Point Break.” It’s basically everybody’s favorite cheesy ‘90s action movie. Sure, most of the fun is in watching Keanu Reeves as an FBI agent who infiltrates a gang of thrill-seeking, surfing bank robbers. Busey plays one of Reeves’ fellow FBI agents, and he brings his certain energy to the role. Oh, did we mention that Reeves plays a character named Johnny Utah?
"The Firm" (1993)
When you think about “The Firm,” the first name you think of isn’t going to be Busey’s. After all, we’re talking about a film starring Tom Cruise, and the cast features a ton of great character actors. Busey still makes his impact, though, in his role of Eddie Lomax, a private investigator. While the events of the film don’t unfold well for Lomax, it’s a noteworthy performance.
"Black Sheep" (1996)
To this point, we’ve been talking about Busey’s dramatic work. “Black Sheep” is decidedly not a drama. In fact, it’s a goofy comedy starring Chris Farley and David Spade. It’s not quite as adored as “Tommy Boy,” but “Black Sheep” still has its supporters. It’s a slightly convoluted political comedy that is mostly about Farley playing a genial doofus, while Spade plays a sarcastic, exasperated guy. You know, business as usual for those two together. Busey really gets to chew the scenery as Sergeant Drake Sabitch, a Vietnam vet who has a screw loose.
"Lost Highway" (1997)
“Lost Highway” is a movie about…honestly, who knows? And who really cares? It’s a David Lynch movie. It’s about atmosphere and visuals and all that stuff. Even for a Lynch film, though, “Lost Highway” is dense and hard to parse. Busey’s role isn’t big, but by this point in his career, he wasn’t getting many opportunities like this. Lynch isn’t afraid to make an outside-the-box choice, though, so he gave Busey a shot.
"Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" (1998)
This adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson’s most famous book wasn’t a huge success has its issues, but the movie has become a cult classic. It’s also a really weird movie, featuring a lot of noteworthy actors popping up for short stretches of time. Mostly, we watch Johnny Depp and Benicio del Toro having drug trips and traveling through the desert. While they are going through that desert, they run into a highway patrolman played by Busey. He only has a little while to make an impact, and there is a lot going on in this movie to overshadow him, but Busey’s weirdness works in a Terry Gilliam film.
"The Gingerdead Man" (2005)
Look, the new millennium has not gone well for Busey. He became known more for his erratic behavior, and his filmography has really fallen by the wayside. He’s been in a lot of stuff, but none of it is good, and a lot of it is unknown. Most of his recent films don’t even have Wikipedia pages. Want to have some fun, though? Then watch “The Gingerdead Man.” It’s a weird, so-bad-it’s-good horror movie that has to be seen to be believed. Busey plays a serial killer who gets executed but comes back to life in the body of a gingerbread man. Then he terrorizes a bunch of bakery employees and other assorted people. Busey has to carry this movie, and…well, he can’t make it respectable. However, he helps make it laughable in a fun way.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have a very exciting team on paper heading into the 2025 NFL season as the organization has made plenty of changes throughout the offseason. It can be argued that both sides of the ball have been upgraded in some way, and the rookie class provides some excitement as well. One spot fans might want to see another move made is at wide receiver, as outside of DK Metcalf, there are some question marks in the room. Calvin Austin III took a strong step forward in 2024, but he has missed a large chunk of time during training camp this month due to injury, and Roman Wilson is still making strides. There are some interesting veterans that are still available in free agency, and some more names should hit the open market at the end of August when teams cut down to their 53-man rosters. However, one of the interesting names on the market currently is former superstar wide receiver, Odell Beckham Jr. Beckham was a standout during his time with the New York Giants and Cleveland Browns, and he won a Super Bowl with the Los Angeles Rams. He recently joined Bill Maher on the Club Random podcast, and he shared that he has had conversations with quarterback Aaron Rodgers. "Love him, love him," Beckham said of Rodgers. "We've had conversations. I won't say that, that it's not a possibility [joining the Steelers], and I won't say that I haven't had any communication. I f*cking love [Mike] Tomlin. I was actually supposed to be drafted to the Steelers. That was the meeting that I had where I was like, 'I think I'm going to the Steelers.' Giants ended up taking me at 12, Steelers had I think the 16th pick maybe. I think they took Ryan Shazier." Beckham revealed that he has had some conversations with the Pittsburgh quarterback, which could mean the two sides are interested in joining forces with the Steelers. The veteran wide receiver didn't sound too optimistic that anything would happen, but he did not shut down the idea of wearing black and gold during the 2025 season. Beckham has been trying to find his footing in the league ever since he tore his ACL during Super Bowl LVI. The injury caused him to miss the entire 2022 season, and he has since played for the Baltimore Ravens and Miami Dolphins. In the past two seasons, the receiver has caught just 44 passes for 620 yards and three touchdowns. There is no doubting that Beckham has lost a step, but he would certainly be an interesting addition for the Steelers. Some argue that Pittsburgh's wide receiver room is full of too many wide receiver threes and fours, rather than having a solid second option at the position. At this point in his career, Beckham would likely just add to that problem, rather than being a solution. Steelers Were Interested In Beckham During 2014 NFL Draft Beckham also stated during his interview with Maher that the Steelers were very interested in him during the 2014 NFL Draft. He was selected by the Giants with the 12th overall pick, and Pittsburgh selected at 15. The Steelers grabbed Ryan Shazier, but Beckham seemed fairly confident that if he had still been on the board, he would have gone to the Steelers with the 15th pick. This is a bit hard to believe, as the Steelers have not drafted a wide receiver in the first round since the 2006 NFL Draft when the organization selected Santonio Holmes. The wide receiver room was looking a little thin heading into the 2014 season, but the Steelers were able to make it work after picking Martavis Bryant in the fourth round of the same draft.
The Green Bay Packers have a cause for concern with Jordan Love in the preseason. The quarterback suffered a thumb injury during the Packers' 30-10 loss to the New York Jets on Saturday. Love went 1-of-5 passing for seven yards and took a sack for -3 yards in the defeat. Both of his drives ended in punts. Per Matt Schneidman of The Athletic, Love is set to have surgery on his thumb after seeing how it held up at practice on Monday. General manager Brian Gutekunst believes Love will be ready for Week 1 against the Detroit Lions. "Gutekunst sounded adamant that Love will be ready for Week 1 against the Lions," Schneidman wrote. "Hit his left hand on a helmet on that half-scramble vs. Jets. Wanted to see how it felt at practice yesterday and decided to get it fixed to avoid future issues. Will be with team in Indianapolis. "Brian Gutekunst says Jordan Love is having a procedure done on his left thumb. It’s a 'ligament thing.' Hurt it in the preseason opener. Gutekunst hopes he returns to practice next week." The injury comes at an inopportune time for the Packers. Love and the majority of his receivers have not been in sync during training camp and in the preseason game. Like last season, Packers' receivers have dropped passes during practices and did so in the preseason opener against the Jets. Green Bay needs Love on the field, gaining chemistry with his pass-catching targets, including first-round pick Matthew Golden, before it plays the Lions.
The quarterback battle for Notre Dame is set to come to an end shortly, and it might be a surprise considering how the national media predicted the race to finish. Per Eric Hansen of On3, head coach Marcus Freeman is set to name the starting quarterback by Sunday when he meets the media. The Irish are still letting the quarterback battle play out until then, but it appears sophomore quarterback Kenny Minchey is the favorite to start at Hard Rock Stadium against the Miami Hurricanes on Aug. 31. Minchey has shown improvement in numerous areas throughout camp, and he has the edge on freshman quarterback CJ Carr in what is believed to be the final week of the competition. "As of Wednesday, the line between 1 and 2 remained blurred," Hansen wrote. "The tiebreaker may eventually go to Minchey, per the source, because of his ability to be a true running threat and offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock’s preference to have that element to put pressure on opposing defenses. "But he also has a preference for QBs who can transcend adversity, and the training camp phase was choreographed to test precisely that. While both contenders responded persistently in a manner that defies their inexperience, Minchey has been exceptional in that regard." Throughout the summer, ESPN writers such as Bill Connelly and Mark Schlabach have written as though it were a forgone conclusion that Carr would win the battle in training camp. However, Minchey appears to be a natural fit for how offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock likes to scheme against a defense. He helped dual-threat Jayden Daniels earn a Heisman Trophy in 2023 and took Notre Dame to a national championship appearance with Riley Leonard. The battle isn't over, but the edge appears to be running Minchey's way.
As soon as it was confirmed on Tuesday that Buffalo Bills running back James Cook planned to resume practicing because things had "changed" regarding his desire for a contract extension, it seemed to be a matter of when and not if fans would learn that the two sides had come to terms on an agreement. It turns out Cook had millions of reasons to suit up on Aug. 12. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Wednesday morning that Cook has received a four-year, $48M contract extension that includes $30M guaranteed from the Bills. According to Alaina Getzenberg of ESPN, the $30M guarantee is the most handed to a running back over the past five years. Cook was in the final year of his rookie deal and stopped participating in training-camp practices as part of a hold-in earlier in August. However, his agent later insisted that the 25-year-old "only wants to be a Buffalo Bill" and would continue "working toward" a resolution through the preseason. Last week, Buffalo quarterback and reigning regular-season Most Valuable Player Josh Allen directly said that he "desperately" wanted to have Cook back on the practice field and in the lineup. That's understandable considering what's expected of the 2025 Bills. As of Wednesday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook continued to list the Bills and Baltimore Ravens as the co-favorites at +600 betting odds to win Super Bowl LX this coming February. Meanwhile, Cook was responsible for the ninth-most regular-season rushing yards (2,131) in the league over the past two campaigns. He, Ravens star Derrick Henry and Jahmyr Gibbs of the Detroit Lions led the NFL with 16 rushing touchdowns each last season. In the end, trading Cook for a future draft asset never made much sense for a Bills team that is looking to do more than simply qualify for the next postseason tournament. "James could only envision himself as a Buffalo Bill," agent Zac Hiller told Schefter. "We are extremely thankful to the entire Bills organization and glad we could make that happen." With the Cook saga now behind them, the Bills can fully focus on preparing for their Week 1 "Sunday Night Football" showdown with the Ravens that will take place at Buffalo's Highmark Stadium on Sept. 7.
