We have an actor who can become a codified and proper Movie Star. We have a director that needs a rebound in a major way. We have a movie that will be compared to an immensely-silly cult classic starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. It's been a moment awaited with intrigue, and now the trailer for "The Running Man," starring Glen Powell and directed by Edgar Wright, is here.
Seems fun! Alright, have a good one!
Wait, you probably want more insight than that, don't you? The talk was that Wright's adaptation was more attuned to Stephen King's original story, and the plotting here is decidedly different from the Schwarzenegger movie. While this is an over-the-top, humor-infused action movie, it's definitely less silly than the '80s "Running Man." That movie is a lot of fun itself, but it's straight-up dumb. It's cartoonish. This one is decidedly not cartoonish, even if Michael Cera is wielding a knock-off Super Soaker.
This is the kind of big action movie that can work, but it can't coast on the idea people know the Schwarzenegger film. Powell is the driving force here, even if Colman Domingo is clearly crushing it as the host of "The Running Man," a role played by Richard Dawson in the '80s film. The movie is operating as a full-on vehicle for Powell. Brad Pitt can sell "F1," but can Powell sell this? Having a trailer that seems fun, helps.
Additionally, this is an astute pivot for Wright. He has shown an affinity for trying different genres, and giving "Last Night in Soho" a shot was all well and good, but that was a critical and commercial misfire. Delivering a hit action movie, one with panache and style but not overly ambitious, would serve him well.
The first trailer for "The Running Man" gives us the intention of checking it out when it arrives in theaters on November 7, so mission accomplished there.
