When the trailer for Guillermo del Toro's 'Frankenstein' debuted, anticipation was high, with many praising its striking visuals. The drawback: the film was set for a November 7 release on Netflix, with no mention of a theatrical run despite its awards ambitions.
That sparked debate online, and whether it was always planned or not, Netflix has since confirmed the film will receive a limited theatrical release.
'Frankenstein' will open in select theaters October 17 ahead of its November 7 debut on Netflix, giving Guillermo del Toro’s film a run in theaters during the Halloween season. The word “select,” however, is doing heavy lifting. Netflix’s limited theatrical releases are often sparse, with only a handful of screenings even in major metropolitan areas.
It remains to be seen whether 'Frankenstein,' a larger-scale production with awards aspirations, will receive wider placement than past Netflix titles. Still, any theatrical release is more than fans initially expected. Around the same time, Netflix will also give its Oscar hopeful 'Nouvelle Vague' a limited theatrical run.
