James Gunn teases possibility his DCU Superman already knows about Batman

Superman is finally ready to soar back into theaters , but that doesn’t mean moviegoers aren’t still thinking about when another icon will join him in James Gunn’s DCU. We don’t know who will play Bruce Wayne or when he will even appear in the rebooted superhero franchise. Only, he might already exist there. Gunn teased the possibility his Clark Kent has already seen “a man dressed up as a bat.”

During an interview promoting his upcoming film, Gunn answered a question from “Jake’s Takes” Jake Hamilton about how his Superman might someday react to seeing the Dark Knight for the first time. After laughing at the thought, Gunn gave an answer that was way more fun and way more tantalizing than anyone could have expected. “Well, first of all, we don’t know he hasn’t already seen a man dressed up as a bat.”

Oooooh. Well well well.

Now obviously this might be nothing more than Gunn playing coy and playful. It could also just mean he hasn’t made any hard and fast decisions yet on where Batman fits into the DCU at this point. Is he an established presence in this cinematic universe already? Someone Superman would know about same as everyone else? Or will Bruce Wayne ultimately be a newcomer to the superhero scene Superman doesn’t know about yet?

We don’t know and Gunn himself might not be totally sure yet, either. Or he knew exactly what he was saying there and it’s a big tease we should take even more seriously.

Like we said, fun and tantalizing.

Whenever—past or future—Superman meets Batman, Gunn has a pretty good idea what the Man of Steel will think of the Caped Crusader. “I think that he’d probably see a kindred spirit in that,” said Gunn, “Another crazy person wearing a crazy costume. With a very different intent.”

“Different intent,” indeed, James Gunn. Different intent, indeed. But despite their differences, it sounds like when these two versions of the characters come together on screen we can forget about Batman vs Superman. Whenever the Dark Knight does show up it sounds like it’ll be more like Batman & Superman.
