Netflix is still waiting for its big Oscars success story. Kathryn Bigelow has been out of the limelight for years and could use a bounceback film. They've joined forces, and we now know the name, the release date, and a bit about the plot of Bigelow's possible-comeback film.
While Bigelow's biggest contribution to film is her hit "Point Break," she made history with her movie "The Hurt Locker." Not only did it win Best Picture for 2009, she became the first woman to win Best Director at the Oscars. She followed that up with another war film, "Zero Dark Thirty," which proved polarizing. Then, "Detroit" was not a success and just kind of bummed people out. That was 2017. Bigelow's new movie is her first film since that misfire.
Her new film is called "A House of Dynamite." The logline reads: "When a single, unattributed missile is launched at the United States, a race begins to determine who is responsible and how to respond." That means Bigelow is getting back into the world of political/military drama.
"A House of Dynamite" has a remarkable cast, the most-impressive in Bigelow's career in our assessment. We're talking Idris Elba, Greta Lee, Rebecca Ferguson, Tracy Letts, and more. Nobody flashy and "movie star" like, but talented, recognizable actors.
The movie will hit Netflix on October 24, but will get a limited theatrical release before that. Netflix wants it to be an Oscars play, after all. Of course, that was the hope for "Detroit," and that didn't work out for anybody involved. Even if "A House of Dynamite" doesn't get Netflix the Oscars it wants, it should benefit Bigelow.
