Mark Hamill has delighted audiences as Luke Skywalker, the iconic farmboy-turned-Jedi-Knight, ever since the first Star Wars movie debuted in 1977. He starred in the three original trilogy movies, then years later, he appeared in all three sequel trilogy films. However, now the actor says he has hung up his lightsaber for good.
In an interview with Comicbook.com, Hamill was asked if he would return for the upcoming Rey Skywalker movie, tentatively titled New Jedi Order. Here was what he had to say.
“I am so grateful to George [Lucas] for letting me be a part of that back in the day, the humble days when George called Star Wars ‘the most expensive low-budget movie ever made.’ We never expected it to become a permanent franchise and a part of pop culture like that. But my deal is, I had my time. I’m appreciative of that, but I really think they should focus on the future and all the new characters.”
Although Luke (SPOILER) died in 2017’s The Last Jedi, he appeared as a Force ghost in 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker. Hamill also played Luke in the Disney+ series The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, though his face was digitally youthened with CGI, and AI was used to make his voice sound younger.
In addition to Luke, (SPOILER) Princess Leia Organa and Han Solo also died during the sequel trilogy, but all three made appearances in one form or another after death in The Rise of Skywalker. For all that movie’s flaws, it gave our old friends decent sendoffs. Fans were famously outraged to see Luke as a cynical, depressed old man in The Last Jedi, so it might be wise to let New Jedi Order focus solely on the sequel trilogy characters. Still, a Force ghost cameo of Hamill might still be nice to see, but it looks like that’s not happening.
Mark Hamill has had a prominent career as a voice actor since the original Star Wars trilogy. Perhaps most famously, he voiced the Joker in the beloved Batman: The Animated Series. He has also appeared in various other live-action films such as Corvette Summer and The Big Red One. His latest movie, The Life of Chuck, opens in select theaters on June 6, with a nationwide release on June 13. Even if he never plays Luke Skywalker again, Mark Hamill’s legacy will live forever.
