In a shocking twist in MobLand Episode 7, Harry (Tom Hardy) calls in a very big favor in order to get the Harrigans out of one very particular jam. But who is this mysterious new character? And how will she impact the second half of the show?
Here's what we know about Janet McTeer's formidable Kat McCallister, plus why the ending of Episode 7 seems to hint that Harry is playing a bigger game than we ever suspected. Spoilers ahead.
In the final moments of Episode 7, "The Crossroads," after Brendan (Daniel Betts) has been slain by the chainsaw, Harry manages to convince a woman named Kat McCallister to stay the execution of Seraphina (Mandeep Dhillon). He's able to do this because apparently Kat has taken a shine to him, and even more relevantly, she wields untold power over various different gangs.
Make no mistake, although Janet McTeer was revealed to be in the MobLand cast before the show began, this is her first appearance in the series. You didn't miss anything. Kat is basically a new character, a mob boss above all mob bosses, capable of telling everybody what to do.
But what does it mean? And what kind of long game is Harry really playing?
Right now, the biggest question in MobLand is the one that we don't know the answer to: Who is the mole inside the Harrigan family? In theory, Jan (Joanne Froggatt) is the one who accidentally revealed that Harry was headed to Antwerp, but who told Richie Stevenson (Geoff Bell) that Brendan and Seraphina were there in the first place?
The revelation that Harry has much deeper connections to a larger criminal network could reveal that he's a bigger game player than we thought. For the most part, the narrative of the series forces us to assume that Harry is a savvy, if somewhat unwilling, pawn in the larger gangland conflicts. He called in a favor from Kat to save Seraphina, but is that all that's happened? Harry's job is a "fixer" for the Harrigans, but it's of course, possible that he's not just reacting to situations.
Could Harry be behind some of the conflicts he's been tasked with solving? With several unanswered questions and a new power base in the show, it seems that the last three episodes of MobLand will be twistier than we ever expected.
The next episode of MobLand hits Paramount+ on Sunday, May 18.
