Nicolas Cage is finally addressing those True Detective casting rumors after it was hinted that the Oscar-winning actor would lead Season 5 of HBO’s lauded crime drama.
It’s been more than two years since Season 4 of the anthology series aired, with Jodie Foster and Kali Reis helming the chapter known as Night Country, and HBO has already teased a 2027 return for the fan favorite, but is Cage going to be the next one to carry the metaphorical torch? In an interview with Variety, the actor clarified previous rumblings suggesting he’d join the cast.
“I have no idea. I think they’re working on the material, but I haven’t heard about it in quite some time,” Cage offered. “I’m not signed on to anything; we’re just talking.” He went on to add, “I like Issa López a lot, and would be thrilled to work with her, but nothing is concrete.”
López took over as showrunner for the series during its Night Country run, picking up the reins from original showrunner Nic Pizzolatto, who helmed Seasons 1 through 3.

“I’ve never seen the first season of True Detective, but I’ve heard great things,” Cage noted of his own experience with the show. It’s unclear if he’s seen other chapters.
Season 5 of True Detective was ordered with López at the helm amid Season 4’s run, and it was later revealed that it will be set in New York City. It’s unclear what era the season will take place in, as past chapters of the series have occasionally drifted through time or have started in earlier eras than the present day.
Cage’s update on True Detective rings true with early reports suggesting his potential casting, as it was noted he was merely in talks to take on the leading role, not that he’d officially signed on.
