No, Robin will not be in "The Batman 2"

Even though Matt Reeves’ Batman films will exist outside James Gunn’s DC universe, Gunn remains the public face of DC’s movie slate. But given how active he is online, he’s the one fielding questions about 'The Batman 2.' With news breaking that production will kick off next spring, the rumor mill is already churning, and Gunn has wasted no time in swatting down a few of those early rumors.

The big rumor making the rounds is that Robin, Batman’s young sidekick, will appear in 'The Batman 2.' That’s a hard no from James Gunn. He jumped on his platform of choice, Threads, to shut it down: “Guys, please stop believing this nonsense. I think six of us have read the script. No one knows anything about The Batman 2.” Gunn had previously posted, “Anything you’ve heard about that movie is made up or a guess. No one in the world knows anything about the concept for the story except four people.”

It’s clear Gunn wants to stamp out the speculation. And, to be fair, if what he’s saying is accurate, all this chatter amounts to nothing. It’s the classic internet rumor playbook: toss out a “scoop,” and if it’s right, you get to claim victory; if it’s wrong, people either forget or you find a way to explain it away.

Robin made his last big-screen appearance in Joel Schumacher’s Batman films, and we say “infamously” because those movies are about as over-the-top as they come, with Chris O’Donnell delivering a particularly rough take on the character. That doesn’t mean Robin is forever tarnished, but it’s hard to imagine him fitting into the darker, more grounded world Reeves has built.

For Gunn’s next round of rumor-busting, you can keep an eye right here… or, if you prefer, follow him over on Threads.
