The renowned adult sci-fi animated series Rick and Morty is back for another season! To recap, the show displays the adventures of scientist Rick and his grandson Morty. Things are different, though, in Rick and Morty Season 8 Episode 1. This brand-new episode focuses more on Morty and his older sister, Summer. They struggle with returning to normalcy after being forced to grow up. But did you know this new installment revived a classic catchphrase for a split second?
Rick and Morty Season 8 Episode 1 opens with an adult Morty and Summer. They’re living in a world that places a heavy importance on cellphone chargers. In truth, it’s a virtual reality that Rick placed them in to punish them. They took his phone charger without permission and didn’t return it. But he accidentally fell asleep, thus leaving his grandkids in there for a lifetime.
Summer activates a device that breaks the simulation, returning them to the real world. Rick tries to wipe their memories, but they choose to retain their experiences. Summer fails to return to her teenage life and begins bonding with her mother, Beth. It goes well until Summer displays her massive arrogance, which upsets her mom. Beth attempts to wipe her daughter’s mind, and Summer runs away in response. The two reconcile, with Beth telling Summer to enjoy her teenage years while she can.
Meanwhile, Rick and Morty reconnect by working on Rick’s death race car. The unfortunate thing is Morty’s trauma from the virtual world periodically haunts him. He eventually traps Rick in the digital universe and steals the newly renovated vehicle. Morty plans to destroy a nuclear power plant, but Summer stops him. She admits to being the reason behind his traumatic experiences in the alternate reality. Rick and Morty Season 8 Episode 1 ends with Rick wiping the kid’s minds.
This Rick and Morty episode marked the return of Rick’s iconic catchphrase, “Wubba Lubba dub-dub.” He says it as he escapes the reality that the PTSD-stricken Morty trapped him in. The saying was introduced and used by the alcoholic scientist throughout Season One. Afterward, it hasn’t had much screen time save for a few instances. But it looks like “Wubba Lubba dub-dub” is coming back and here to stay.
Rick and Morty Season 8 Episode 1 falls under the list of the serious entries. It presents how post-traumatic stress disorder can affect a person’s mind. Morty experienced the horrors of war when trapped in Rick’s virtual universe. And after he got out, he experienced flashbacks, became reckless, and felt immense guilt. He essentially underwent the classic tale of a soldier unable to adjust to civilian life.
Viewers who’ve struggled with PTSD likely sympathized with Morty during his turmoil. Others probably learned how to identify the signs of this disorder. Even if it doesn’t mean to, this Rick and Morty episode offers a valuable service. Kudos to the showrunners for pulling this off, and maybe they’ll do it again soon.
I give Rick and Morty Season 8 Episode 1 an 8 out of 10. It didn’t present much of the traditional science fiction antics past seasons possessed. But its depiction of Morty’s struggle with PTSD carried the episode. It was also pleasant to see the duo bond, even if it was a farce. So far, Season 8 is shaping up to be an interesting arc. There’s no telling what will happen when the newest episode premieres next week.
