Kevin Williamson’s 'The Waterfront' cancelled by Netflix

Netflix has decided not to renew Kevin Williamson’s The Waterfront for a second season. The cast included Holt McCallany, Maria Bello, Jake Weary, Melissa Benoist, Rafael L. Silva, Humberly González, Danielle Campbell, Brady Hepner, Topher Grace, Dave Annable, Michael Gaston, Gerardo Celasco, and Zach Roerig.

Inspired by true events, the twisty drama dives into the flawed Buckley family as their attempts to retain control of their crumbling North Carolina fishing empire drive them to increasingly dangerous means to keep themselves afloat.

“A big thank you to everyone who watched The Waterfront. While I'm sad the Buckley's won't be back for a season 2, I'm celebrating the joy that was Season 1,” the writer, executive producer, and showrunner wrote on his Instagram. “I had the pleasure of working with a dream cast and crew. My heart is full of gratitude for all the people who brought their talents to the show both in NC and LA. You were all amazing. Thank you to my partners at Universal TV. And thank you to Netflix for taking a chance on a very personal story. You were truly a joy to work with! It was one of the best experiences of my life! Thank you.”

Williamson broke out in the mid-1990s as the writer of Wes Craven’s smash hit ‘Scream,’ which reinvented the slasher genre with its mix of meta-humor and genuine scares. He followed that success with the cult favorite ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ and cemented his TV legacy by creating the teen drama ‘Dawson’s Creek,’ a defining show of its era. Over the years, Williamson has balanced horror and heartfelt storytelling, later developing series like ‘The Vampire Diaries’ and ‘The Following.’  ‘The Waterfront,’ marked his latest bid to bring another buzzy drama to television, but it failed to cut through to find a big enough audience.

Executive producers of the show also included Ben Fast for Outerbanks Entertainment, Michael Narducci, and Marcos Siega.

For decades, the Buckley family has ruled Havenport, North Carolina, dominating everything from the local fishing industry to the town’s restaurant scene. But their fishing empire has started to crumble as patriarch Harlan Buckley (McCallany) recovers from two heart attacks, and his wife Belle (Bello) and son Cane (Weary) venture into the deep end to keep the family businesses afloat.

As their attempts spiral out of control and into treacherous waters, Harlan steps back in to take command. Facing her own demons, Buckley daughter Bree (Benoist) — an addict in recovery who’s lost custody of her son Diller (Hepner) — finds herself entangled in a complicated relationship that could threaten the family’s future forever.

All episodes of the first season are streaming.
