Ridley Scott confirms that 'Gladiator 2' is being 'written now'

Ridley Scott's directorial plate is overflowing, but he just confirmed he's adding one more project.

While the general public can't wait to see The Last Duel and House of Gucci — both of which were directed and produced by Ridley — on Oct. 15 and Nov. 24, respectively, the 83-year-old film giant has already moved on.

"I'm already having [the next] Gladiator written now," Ridley told Empire Magazine. "So when I've done Napoleon, Gladiator will be ready to go."

Napoleon is in reference to Kitbag, Scott's forthcoming biographical drama about "Napoleon Bonaparte's origins and his swift, ruthless climb to emperor, viewed through the prism of his addictive and often volatile relationship with his wife and one true love, Josephine" (h/t IMDb).

"The thing that really makes Napoleon tick is, why was he in so much need of Josephine?" the four-time Oscar nominee added to Empire. "There was a need for each other. And we think we've pinpointed what that was."

Deadline exclusively reported last October that Joaquin Phoenix will play Napoleon, and Jodie Comer was attached in March to portray Josephine.

Comer also stars in The Last Duel as Marguerite de Carrouges, who accuses Jacques LeGris (Adam Driver) of raping her, which results in a duel involving Jean de Carrouges (Matt Damon). Set in 14th century France, the film is based upon a true story chronicled in Eric Jager's book The Last Duel: A True Story of Trial by Combat in Medieval France published in 2004. Ben Affleck and Damon co-wrote the screenplay with Nicole Holofcener.

Driver will star in House of Gucci opposite Lady Gaga. The crime drama, denounced by the Gucci family, additionally boasts Al Pacino, Jared Leto, Salma Hayek, Jeremy Irons and Jack Huston, and the premise orbits around the real-life murder-for-hire plot by Patrizia Reggiani (Gaga) that killed Maurizio Gucci (Driver).

The hype will be even bigger for Gladiator 2, as Gladiator premiered all the way back in 2000. Directed by Scott, the film won five Oscars: best picture, best actor in a leading role (Russell Crowe), best costume design, best sound and best visual effects. Scott was nominated for best director, and Phoenix was nominated for best supporting actor.
