Selena Gomez surprises Steve Martin and Martin Short with their 'Only Murders in the Building' SAG awards

While the Screen Actors Guild Awards, aka the SAG Awards, garner most of their attention from being an Oscars precursor, the voting body gives out TV awards as well. Hulu's "Only Murders in the Building" was the big winner that night. The show won Outstanding Ensemble in a Comedy Series, which is the SAG equivalent of Outstanding Series at the Emmys. On top of that, Martin Short won individually as well.

Selena Gomez was there at the SAG Awards to accept the ensemble award, but her co-stars Steve Martin and Martin Short were both absent. While Gomez joked that they were not there because "they don't really care" (the exact kind of joke both Martin and Short would make), we do know Short, who is 74, was dealing with COVID at the time. The two comedy legends need not remain empty-handed, though, as Gomez presented SAG Award trophies to both of them as a surprise.

Joined by co-star Michael Cyril Creighton and the show's co-creator Jordan Hoffman (three SAG trophies require three sets of hands, evidently), Gomez presented the spoils of victory to her two co-stars, who proceeded to respond as one would expect/hope from Martin and Short. Short, in particular, went right into "Marty Short" mode without skipping a beat. There's a reason why those two remains beloved comedy institutions.

The fifth season of "Only Murders in the Building" is current in production. While the fourth season was good, it was also overstuffed, as if though no idea from early brainstorming sessions was tossed out. A show known for a smattering of famous guest stars was packed to the brim with notable faces. While "Only Murders in the Building" isn't about to get subtle, we do hope maybe the fifth season will pare back just a bit. After all, the main cast has SAG Award-winning actor Martin Short in it!
