Lucy Dacus just confirmed that Taylor Swift did name-drop her on The Tortured Poets Department's title track. "I think it's fair game to say 'yes,'" she told PEOPLE of the mention. "She actually texted me and asked for my approval."
Sometimes, I wonder if you're gonna screw this up with me / But you told Lucy you'd kill yourself if I ever leave / And I had said that to Jack about you, so I felt seen / Everyone we know understands why it's meant to be / 'Cause we're crazy
So how did she react? "Well, I pushed play on the album just like, 'Oh, this is so crazy,'" Dacus shared. "This is the first Taylor record to come out since meeting her, and listening to a friend's record feels so much different than a stranger's record. So I was like, 'This is really weird. This voice that I've heard basically what feels like my whole waking life saying my name.'"
"It was definitely an experience," the singer/songwriter continued to express. "I sat down, and I was like, 'Huh. Wow.' But I think that that record of hers is super open-hearted, and I don't know how many people at her level, if anyone is at her level, are writing from the heart that openly."
The Tortured Poets Department was actually a surprise double album with TTPD: The Anthology dropping at 2 am on release night. "I’d written so much tortured poetry in the past 2 years and wanted to share it all with you, so here’s the second installment of TTPD: The Anthology. 15 extra songs. And now the story isn’t mine anymore… it’s all yours," Swift wrote on Instagram.
As for Dacus' new album, she told Variety, "[There's] something for everyone, hopefully. Even with the few people that I’ve talked to that have heard it, people will be like, 'I felt really seen by 'Limerence.'' And I’m like, 'Wow — sorry. That sounds hard.' Or people will be like, 'I feel really seen by 'Best Guess.' That’s how I feel about my partner,' and I’m like, 'That’s amazing.' That sentiment of lost time and 'I need to make up for all the time that I wasn’t telling you that I love you'… I hope that people who will give it the time of day will find something that speaks to them."
Forever Is A Feeling is out now.
