The 15 best sci-fi films of 2022

Science fiction has always been a big part of the movie landscape. Don’t believe us? How about Star Wars? Or 2001: A Space Odyssey? Or that movie where they go to the moon, and the rocket lands in the moon’s eye? Sci-fi is a vast genre and is as popular as ever. After all, a lot of comic book movies and action movies are sci-fi adjacent, if not outright sci-fi. As such, we have many options for the best sci-fi films of 2022. Honestly? This year was perhaps not the best year for sci-fi, but in one way or another, these are 15 sci-fi films worth checking out.

'Moonfall'

'Moonfall'
Summit Entertainment

Moonfall is not good in any traditional sense. What it is, though, is a bonkers, bizarre sci-fi disaster film. It's a Roland Emmerich film, and if you aren't familiar, he's the guy who did movies like Independence Day and Day After Tomorrow. Anyway, it's about the moon falling toward Earth.

'Everything Everywhere All At Once'

'Everything Everywhere All At Once'
A24

Everything Everywhere All At Once is a lot, and that's intentional. Sometimes, it's great. Sometimes, the film seems incredibly self-satisfied to the point of grating. Ultimately, though, it's a worthwhile watch, owing mainly to the cast headlined by the excellent Michelle Yeoh (and Ke Huy Quan).

'Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Childhood'

'Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Childhood'
Netflix

Perhaps this is a bit of a stretch, but Richard Linklater's film has a science fiction element. The hook is that NASA secretly recruits a kid to go into space basically as a test run before the launch of Apollo 11, hence the name. That part is definitely sci-fi. The only thing is that half of the movie is just remembering stuff from being a kid in the 1960s.

'Sonic the Hedgehog 2'

'Sonic the Hedgehog 2'
Paramount

Hey, Sonic is a talking hedgehog who can run really fast. That's not based on scientific fact. Dr. Robotik's presence makes Sonic the Hedgehog 2 more definitively a sci-fi film. It was a big blockbuster, and this time with no freaky teeth.

'Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness'

'Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness'
Disney

Doctor Strange is magic, but magic in the MCU is often akin to science fiction. Plus, there's the whole multiverse thing. That's sci-fi, if anything is. While this film sometimes feels ready to fall apart, Multiverse of Madness keeps it together, and it's fun that Sam Raimi returned to directing.

'Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers'

'Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers'
Disney

Talking animals don't automatically qualify this movie as science fiction. It's mostly a comedy film, but again, this was not necessarily the best year for sci-fi. There's a storyline running through Chip 'n Dale that cartoon characters are being "bootlegged," and that is a sci-fi element that is key to the story. Anyway, this movie is fun, sci-fi or not.

7 of 15

'Jurassic World Dominion'

'Jurassic World Dominion'
Legendary

Look, Jurassic Park Dominion is a mess. However, it's a fun mess. It was worth it to see Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum back together. This is a stuffed film, and not everything packed in is good. Still, if you were watching the series unfold, watching it all culminate is worth it.

8 of 15

'Lightyear'

'Lightyear'
Disney

In Toy Story, Buzz Lightyear is a toy. Here, he's no toy. Also, he's voiced by Chris Evans. Lightyear is an outer-space adventure built off the backstory of Buzz. Maybe that feels a little muddled, but it's still a fun adventure flick.

9 of 15

'Minions: The Rise of Gru'

'Minions: The Rise of Gru'
Universal

You can't deny the popularity of the Minions. These films make a ton of cash, and the Minions truly captured the zeitgeist. The comedy isn't always a home run, but if you consider Despicable Me a sci-fi franchise, which is fair, it's one of the most popular ones out there.

10 of 15

'Thor: Love and Thunder'

'Thor: Love and Thunder'
Disney

We return to the MCU, and Thor and company are traveling through space instead of traveling the multiverse. While this is a step down from Ragnarok, Love and Thunder is still a good adventure. Having Christian Bale playing a villain named Gorr the God Butcher helps.

11 of 15

'Nope'

'Nope'
Universal

Jordan Peele's first two films were domestic horror. Nope is sci-fi horror that sees Peele turn to the world of the monster movie. Nope doesn't feel like most monster movies because that's not how Peele operates. Maybe that's why this film was a little polarizing, but it worked for us.

12 of 15

'Prey'

'Prey'
Hulu

Speaking of sci-fi horror, the Predator franchise is at the forefront of that (especially since the Alien franchise drifted toward action even more than Predator did). Prey is a prequel set hundreds of years before the first film. That gives the movie enough freshness, and it's also just a well-crafted horror movie.

13 of 15

'Three Thousand Years of Longing'

'Three Thousand Years of Longing'
MGM

Perhaps this is more fantasy than sci-fi, but this movie threads the needle. In the wake of Fury Road , George Miller made a movie that is a romantic drama about a genie and a professor. The guy does what he wants, and there's nobody with a filmography like Miller. It helps that Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba star.

14 of 15

'Black Panther: Wakanda Forever'

'Black Panther: Wakanda Forever'
Disney

Once more into the MCU. The Black Panther  films are more dedicated to sci-fi than other avenues of this world. Wakanda's whole thing is technological advancement. Sadly, the death of Chadwick Boseman complicated Wakanda Forever, but Ryan Coogler managed to make a worthy sequel, nevertheless.

'Strange World'

'Strange World'
Disney

With animation, you can let your imagination run wild. Strange World is the heaviest sci-fi of 2022. It's rife with strange lifeforms and fantastical planets. This is a classic mysterious planet adventure, and if you like sci-fi and animation, Strange World will scratch that itch big time.

Veteran center attempting NHL comeback

Free-agent center Adam Ruzicka turned to the KHL last season and had a solid showing in Russia with Spartak, but notably hasn’t signed a new deal there yet. Spartak adviser Valeri Kamensky told Alexander Abustin of Sport-Express that the reason Ruzicka hasn’t re-signed yet is because he’s holding out hope to get another NHL opportunity. The 26-year-old was a fourth-round pick by Calgary back in 2017, going 109th overall. He spent parts of four seasons with the Flames before being claimed off waivers by Arizona in early 2024. However, a month later, Ruzicka and the Coyotes agreed on a mutual contract termination, making him an unrestricted free agent. After another NHL chance didn’t materialize in short order, he ultimately signed with Spartak in late May 2024. Ruzicka was certainly productive in Russia, notching 26 goals and 19 assists in 65 regular-season games, good for fifth in team scoring. He was even better in the playoffs, picking up seven goals and five helpers in 12 postseason contests, making the most of his opportunity to play a more offensive role after being more of a depth player in the NHL. Over his four NHL seasons, Ruzicka has played in 117 games, picking up 14 goals and 26 assists. However, a good chunk of that production came in 2022-23 when he recorded 20 points in just 44 games with Calgary before his output tailed off the following year. He’s not too far removed from being a legitimate depth contributor at the top level. Kamensky acknowledged that discussions are underway with Ruzicka, so if he doesn’t get another NHL look, he’ll simply re-sign. But, for now at least, it appears he’s hoping to get another chance at the top level first.

Blue Jays demolish MLB records with eye-popping Coors Field performance

DENVER — There's nothing like coming to Coors Field to fix what ails you. Just ask the Toronto Blue Jays. Losers of six of eight games before arriving in Denver, the Blue Jays posted an MLB-record 63 hits in a three-game series while easily sweeping a road series from the Colorado Rockies. By totaling 25 hits on Monday night, 14 on Tuesday and 24 in Wednesday's matinee, the Blue Jays set a new MLB standard for offensive prowess. Toronto passed the MLB record of 62 hits in a three-game series, set by the Boston Red Sox in a June 7-9, 1950 matchup against the St. Louis Browns. As part of the hit parade, Toronto smashed 13 home runs, the most ever surrendered by the Rockies in a three-game set. Included in that barrage were three hits by Bo Bichette, including a three-run shot on Wednesday afternoon that got the Blue Jays rolling in the third inning. Kyle Freeland, Wednesday's starter for Colorado, allowed seven hits in his 4.2 innings of work. That was the fewest amount of hits given up by a Rockies starter against Toronto, as Rockies starter Tanner Gordon allowed 11 in 2.2 frames on Monday, while Anthony Molina surrendered nine in 5.0 innings on Tuesday. "We need to pitch with confidence as starting pitchers. We need to command the baseball better in general," said Rockies interim manager Warren Schaeffer as his team slipped to 30-84 on the season. "We have to put hitters away when we have that opportunity." That was something Colorado couldn't do against the Blue Jays on Wednesday, as their first six runs of a 20-1 blowout win came with two outs in the frame. Wednesday's offensive explosion helped Toronto outscore the Rockies, 45-6, in the series. That run differential was the second-most in MLB's modern era and the most runs scored by an MLB team in a three-game series since the 2019 Chicago Cubs scored 47 runs against the Pittsburgh Pirates from Sept. 13-15, 2019. In all, the 45 runs, 63 hits and 13 home runs allowed in the series were each the most allowed by Colorado pitchers in a three-game set in franchise history. How bad did it get for Colorado at the end of the series? Down 12-1 entering the ninth inning on Wednesday, the Rockies put catcher Austin Nola on the mound for his first-ever pitching appearance. He was nothing like his younger brother, Philadelphia Phillies ace Aaron Nola, as he promptly gave up four consecutive doubles, including RBI shots from Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr., as part of eight hits and eight runs posted by the Blue Jays against him. "It hurts when you get beat that bad for three games," Nola said. "We can compete with anybody. I know we can. We're all Major League players, so it definitely hurts. We're going to have to flush this one and get back out there on Friday in Arizona and have a new competitive attitude." All quotations obtained firsthand unless otherwise noted.

Jalen Milroe Surges Past Former NFL Starter on First Seattle Seahawks Depth Chart

Despite being viewed as a potential first-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, former Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe ended up sliding into the third round. The 22-year-old who was the starter for Alabama for two seasons was selected with the No. 92 pick by the Seattle Seahawks. Although every player's dream is to go in the first round, Milroe likely couldn't have gone to a better situation. There is virtually no pressure on him as the Seahawks signed former Minnesota Vikings quarterback, Sam Darnold, to a three-year, $100.5 million contract this offseason, and also have Drew Lock, who has started 28 career games on the roster as well. However, based on ESPN's initial depth chart, Milroe may be climbing the depth chart sooner than most expected. Seattle Seahawks Depth Chart As reported by ESPN, the Seahawks depth chart goes as follows: QB1: Sam Darnold QB2 Jalen Milroe QB3 Drew Lock If this truly ends up being the case, Milroe has taken major strides following his final season at Alabama. During his final year in Tuscaloosa, Milroe was criticized heavily for forcing passes into windows that weren't there after being late on reads. In his final season at Alabama, Milroe threw a career-high 11 interceptions to just 16 touchdowns, an increase of five more interceptions than he threw in 2023. Although training camp is still ongoing and the preseason games have yet to be played, clearly, Milroe is finding some success in the pacific northwest.

Kevin Love reportedly has preferred buyout destination

Kevin Love reportedly has preferred buyout destination

Kevin Love is eyeing a return to his roots. The five-time NBA All-Star big man Love has a preferred destination on the buyout market, Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints reported on Tuesday. Love would like to end up in Los Angeles. Now 36 years old, Love spent the last two-and-a-half seasons with the Miami Heat. He averaged just 5.3 points and 4.1 rebounds over 10.9 minutes per game in 2024-25 but still managed to shoot 35.8 percent from three on the year. Earlier this summer however, the Heat traded Love to the Utah Jazz as part of a three-team blockbuster deal. Now Love, a 17-year NBA veteran, is pursuing a contract buyout from the rebuilding Jazz. Though he is a native of Lake Oswego, Oregon, Love played his college ball in Los Angeles at UCLA. He also has ties to both L.A. teams — he won an NBA championship with Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James on the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016 and was also coached on that team by Tyronn Lue, who is now head coach of the L.A. Clippers. Both the Lakers and Clippers are currently sitting at 14 guaranteed contracts each. While they still have spots for two-way and Exhibit 10 players, that means the Lakers and Clippers are both down to their final open roster spot. The ex-rebounding leader Love still has some value, though probably more so as a jokester than as a contributing rotation piece. While Love clearly wants a homecoming to Los Angeles, he may have some convincing to do for either the Lakers or the Clippers to give him that final open roster spot.
