Bow down to the queen of hip-hop and R&B soul. Mary J. Blige had quite the epic year, from performing at the Super Bowl and winning an Emmy to making her rounds on tour, but it all started when she released her 14th studio album Good Morning Gorgeous at the top of the year. 

Besides the album’s title track deemed a confidence booster for any listener, Blige brings her signature topics on love and relationships to tracks like “Love Will Never” and “Love Without The Heartbreak." Teaming up with producers like D’Mile, Bongo ByTheWay, Cool & Dre, Anderson .Paak, and London On Da Trak, it’s no wonder Good Morning Gorgeous helped Blige earn several 2023 Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year. Blige is the epitome of an artist with longevity whose talent is still in high demand. 

There may be plenty of talk about the state of R&B, but Kenyon Dixon is not only a huge advocate for some of the genre’s best vocalists but also for independent artists who may not always get the shine they deserve. On Dixon’s latest album Closer, not only does he make fans want to experience romance, but he makes even the biggest R&B fan appreciate the genre even more. Dixon brings his essence of sexual healing on the album’s aptly titled lead track “Marvin Gaye" before going into feelings of crazy in love on “ISLY.” 

He’s joined by artists like Gwen Bunn, D Smoke, and Tiffany Gouche across the album. Dixon highlights feelings of honesty, vulnerability, and commitment while blending the essence of classic R&B with a modern quiet storm twist — a sound that any true R&B fan would love. 

Kehlani takes fans on a journey with their third album Blue Water Road. The album’s first track “little story” sets the tone of hearing waves crashing as they desire another chance at love. Kehlani teams up with LA native Blxst on “any given sunday” as they talk about going to strip clubs in Miami. Another standout track is the part brash yet remorseful “wish I never,” which is sure to get everyone to the dance floor with a sample of Slick Rick’s “Children’s Story.”

GIVĒON stands out among other R&B artists with his baritone range that isn’t often heard in the mainstream. He put the world on notice when he was heard on Drake's song “Chicago Freestyle,” and then released his own project, When It’s All Said and Done… Take Time that featured his hit single “Heartbreak Anniversary.” On his latest album, Give Or Take, GIVĒON finds himself defining the highs and lows of his love life. He wrestles with the single life and commitment issues on songs like “Get To You,” takes a firm stance on his relationship status on “Lost Me,” and questions karma getting a hold of him on “Remind Me.” For fans who enjoy listening to ballads on love and heartbreak, GIVĒON’s Give Or Take is perfect.

Siergio may not be a household name just yet, but his third album Before It’s Too Late proves that he is more than ready to make his mark in the R&B world. His smooth vocals set the album off right with the first track “Energy,” before he slows it down and reflects on a past love on “Complicated.” Siergio also has no problem telling a potential lover how he could treat them better if given a chance on “Leave Him” and speaks his mind about his wants and needs on tracks like “Clothes On” and “Take You Out.”

Alex Isley may come from music royalty as the daughter of legendary guitarist Ernie Isley, but over the years, she continues to make a name for herself in the R&B world. She previously teamed up with frequent collaborator Jack Dine on their 2019 project Wilton. After releasing standalone singles like “Gone” and “Good & Plenty,” they returned this year with their anticipated album Marigold. Dine’s lush production and Isley’s dreamy tone make the perfect pairing to take listeners’ minds to another realm. From being patient in love on the acoustic-driven “Love Again” to desiring growth and change on “105,” Isley and Dine bring an ethereal vibe to Marigold that fans will surely love. 

Lucky Daye has been everywhere since he released his debut album Painted in 2019. Since then, he’s been on an insane feature run alongside artists like Ari Lennox, Kaytranada, Alicia Keys, and Earth, Wind & Fire, and he also snagged his first Grammy earlier this year. In late 2021, Daye released his D’Mile-produced hit single “Over,” which grabbed listeners’ attention with a smooth sample of Musiq Soulchild’s “Halfcrazy.” He starts his album Candydrip with a spoken word dedicated to his lover before teaming up with rapper Smino on the funky “God Body.” He worked with songwriter-producer D’Mile throughout most of the album, including on the fan favorite “Guess,” which features a sample of Usher’s “U Don’t Have To Call.” Like the album title, Daye knows how to fulfill listeners' sweet cravings. 

It’s hard to believe it’s been five years since Ella Mai had fans in their feelings with her hit single “Boo’d Up.” Mai continues to put her feelings on full display in her sophomore album Heart On My Sleeve. It’s evident from the first song “Trying,” in which she realizes the effort a potential lover is putting in to be with her. While there are a few features on the album, such as Latto, Lucky Daye, and Roddy Ricch, Mary J. Blige surprisingly shows up with words of encouragement at the end of “Sink or Swim.” A word from Blige seems perfect for Mai’s album since both singers are notorious for creating music on love and heartbreak. Whether Mai needs a sense of independence after going through betrayal on “How” or being a fool in love on “Leave You Alone,” Heart On My Sleeve is an emotional rollercoaster as she navigates her feelings. 

For fans who enjoy neo-soul mixed with old school, funk, and a little bit of gospel, Samm Henshaw’s Untidy Soul deserves a lot of attention. Hailing from London, it’s no doubt that U.K. R&B artists have always been standouts in the genre, and now Henshaw can say the same. His track “Thoughts and Prayers” beams with the sounds of a New Orleans second line, while the melodies and background vocals heard on “8.16” are reminiscent of a ‘70s soul group. The rasp and warmth in his voice are seamless across the bass lines throughout the album, and the way he approaches a song makes his vocals sound well beyond his years. It wouldn't be surprising to hear if Henshaw claimed to be a student of artists like John Legend, D’Angelo, or Anthony Hamilton.

India Shawn opens up her album Before We Go (Deeper) with a word from Kaye Fox: “The thing about loving you is understanding who you really, really are.” It immediately sets the tone for the rest of the album of Shawn’s journey toward self-love and exploration. The album features all the tracks from her 2021 EP Before We Go, plus seven new songs. She works with songwriter and producer D-Mile across the album, and it’s evident that the chemistry between the two is immaculate. Shawn moves from feelings of giving up on love on “Cali Love” to, towards the end of the album, seeking spiritual guidance on “Patience.” The final track “Just You” closes the album perfectly as Shawn reflects on how she must master self-love before loving anyone else. For listeners on the self-discovery journey, Shawn realizes that one must go a little deeper to be the best person one can be.

When it comes to any PJ Morton album, he’s going to bring soul, funk, blues, and gospel —and he did just that on Watch The Sun. Morton’s piano chords and New Orleans roots are heard throughout the album on songs like “Biggest Mistake” and the Grammy-nominated “Please Don’t Walk Away.” He brings a star-studded cast of features, such as Chronixx, JoJo, Stevie Wonder, Nas, El DeBarge, Wale, and more. From letting life flow on “Be Like Water” to exuding good energy on “My Peace,” Watch The Sun is an album that gives listeners hope and inspiration for better days. 

Steve Lacy is in a league of his own across alternative R&B. His music consists of cosmic sounds that blend psychedelic R&B with funk and indie rock. It’s no wonder his latest album Gemini Rights has been breaking records across multiple Billboard charts. A sound reminiscent of ‘70s soul is heard on “Mercury,” while he expresses regret on the guitar-laden “Bad Habits.” Between a critically acclaimed album, No. 1 single, sold-out tour, Saturday Night Live appearances, and a few Grammy nominations, it’s safe to say it’s Steve Lacy’s world this year, and everyone else is here to witness it. 

In late 2021, Ari Lennox released her old school-inspired single “Pressure,” causing fans to think a new album was on the horizon. However, fans didn’t know the album Age/Sex/Location wouldn’t release until a year later. With a vocal cadence reminiscent of a young Erykah Badu, Lennox uses the album to highlight the ins and outs of her dating life. Lennox showcases her honesty and sensuality on tracks like “Waste My Time" and shows her flirty side alongside crooner Lucky Daye on “Boy Bye.” She also teams up with fellow R&B girl Summer Walker on “Queen Space,” a track that highlights self-worth. Between Lennox's relatable lyrics, smooth production, and a vocal range that leaves listeners in awe, Age/Sex/Location proves how the singer is preserving the delicacy and sanctity of R&B.  

In 2018, Arin Ray put the world on notice with his debut album, Platinum Fire. After taking some time away, he returned this year with Hello Poison. Not only does Ray highlight how people can be passionate in love, but also how complicated and toxic relationships can be. One lyric that stands out from his single “Gold“ is, “This done got a little crazy / Life is looking like a classic Issa Rae scene” — yes, this would've been a perfect addition to the show Insecure.

Rising star Zyah Belle is self-assured and confident on her debut album, Yam Grier. With an album title as a nod to the iconic actress Pam Grier, there’s a level of being fierce and unapologetic as Belle truly comes into her own. Whether Belle is protecting her peace on the infectious single “DND,” catering to her partner on “Make Your Plate,” or starting a fresh beginning on “Spiritual Bath,” the album helps guide listeners on a journey of self-discovery. In addition to the release of Yam Grier, Belle also took the year to tour with acts such as Alex Isley and India Shawn. Yam Grier has heavy replay value for fans who enjoy tunes about self-evolution and self-love. 

Brent Faiyaz brings drama and suspense to his latest album WASTELAND. As an artist whose music is often labeled as toxic R&B, his lyrics cut sharp to a listener’s heart. Throughout the album, he details the ups and downs of relationships, flings, and fame. The album intro “VILLAIN'S THEME” finds Faiyaz discussing his mental state and artistic creativity. He then questions his relationship on “LOOSE CHANGE,” a track with an orchestral backing that sounds like it would be perfect for a theatrical play. Between the tracks, he incorporates skits highlighting the wrongdoings in his relationship with his partner, which unfortunately leads to a tragic ending in “SKIT: WAKE UP CALL.” With production and songwriting from legends such as Raphael Saadiq, The-Dream, and The Neptunes, it’s clear that Faiyaz has one of the most promising albums of the year. 

On every Tank and the Bangas project, the group showcases their New Orleans roots as they blend funk, jazz, hip-hop, and neo-soul. Their signature sound is evident on their latest album Red Balloon. Lead vocalist Tank floats effortlessly across tracks like “Oak Tree,” which beams with pristine horn breaks, while the smooth groove production on “Why Try” gives speakeasy and lounge vibes. The album’s lead single “No ID” is a disco-inspired track, it’s no wonder the band decided to hold a skate party in the music video. Tank and the Bangas’ style is infectious, energetic, and endearing, proving they are here to make a statement because there is no other band like them. 

Singer, songwriter, and producer Babyface has been a staple in the R&B world since the ‘80s. And in 2022, he’s not only still in high demand, but he continues to advocate for the new generation of R&B voices. On his latest album Girls Night Out, he enlists an all-female star-studded cast of today’s rising stars, including Ari Lennox, Kehlani, Ella Mai, Muni Long, Doechii, and more. Babyface adds a verse of his own on each track, but he makes sure to let the ladies shine in their own right. 

Whether Babyface and his collaborators are comparing love to libations on “Liquor” or simply having a good time on the Doechii-assisted “Girls Night Out,” the album proves that women are dominating the R&B game. Perhaps Babyface's next project will feature collaborations with the men of R&B; only time will tell. 

LA-based trio Moonchild returned with their essential blend of neo-soul and jazz on their third album, Starfruit. This is the group’s first album that features other artists, and they didn’t disappoint with collaborations alongside Lalah Hathaway, Alex Isley, Rapsody, and more. The smooth and lush production finds lead Amber Navran’s velvety vocals float effortlessly on tracks like “Takes Two,” “Too Good,” and “Need That.” Starfruit is subtle yet elegant, vibrant yet soothing. No wonder Moonchild earned a 2023 Grammy nomination for Best Progressive R&B Album. And just like an actual starfruit, Moonchild’s sound will surely leave listeners with a sweet feeling. 

It’s been 10 years since Robert Glasper released his Grammy-winning album Black Radio. He returned in February with his signature blends of jazz, hip-hop, and R&B on Black Radio III, before releasing his “supreme edition” several months later. In true Glasper form, he’s joined by a plethora of music's elite class, including Q-Tip, H.E.R., Lalah Hathaway, Jennifer Hudson, the late Mac Miller, and many more. In addition to his original songs, he adds covers of classic hits like Tears for Fears' “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” and The Isley Brothers' “Voyage To Atlantis.” Without a doubt, Glasper is a master at elevating live jazz sounds across his albums, as he lyrically brings some solace and encouragement to his listeners. 

DIXSON has been garnering a following for a few years now. In 2016, he was a contestant on NBC's singing competition The Voice, joining a spot on Pharrell Williams' team. Since then, he's been a songwriter and producer for artists like Chance The Rapper, Justin Bieber, Kirk Franklin, and Beyoncé. Earlier this year, he earned an Oscar nomination for his work on "Be Alive," a track featured in the King Richard film. However, his latest album 004DAISY proves how much his talent goes far beyond the board.

While she has dropped singles and features since then, Mark is finally back with her full-length debut album, Three Dimensions Deep. She blends R&B and pop as themes of self-discovery, self-worth, and guidance ring throughout the 17-track album. Whether she highlights the love that people deserve on "Most Men," gives her take on celebrating life on "FOMO," or uplifts herself during her most insecure moments on "Worth It," the album is essentially about one learning life lessons and gaining confidence along the way. 

It’s hard to believe that over 20 years ago, Tank came onto the scene with his breakout single “Maybe I Deserve.” Throughout his career, he’s always made music for the grown and sexy crowd. That’s why it’s somewhat bittersweet knowing that his recent album R&B Money will be his final project. He keeps it sensual and confident as he teams up with Alex Isley on “No Limit” but also shows his seductive side on the J. Valentine-assisted track “Slow.” Tank has a voice that keeps fans yearning for more, and R&B Money is the type of album perfect for a date night or bedroom rendezvous. If this is Tank’s final album, fans will always appreciate him for elevating the grown R&B subgenre. 

It's been five years since SZA released her critically acclaimed debut album Ctrl, and since then, fans have gotten a bit antsy about when she would release a new album. Well, SZA is finally back with her sophomore project SOS, and it was worth the wait. While the 23-track album is rooted in the singer's alternative R&B sound, SZA also experiments with hip-hop and punk-rock. She might have caught some fans off guard as she spits some toxic bars on the Jay Versace-produced track "Smoking on my Ex Pack," which proves that the R&B girls like rapping, too. 

The rock and pop elements on tracks like "F2F" and "Nobody Gets Me" easily remind fans of MTV's Total Request Live era. In pure SZA form, she's lyrically emotional, messy, vulnerable, and honest. Early fan favorites include the trap-infused "Low," the Babyface-produced "Snooze," and the angelic melodies heard on "Gone Girl." SZA taking five years to craft this follow-up album should be a lesson to all artists: long breaks are needed to grow creatively and artistically.

However one chooses to categorize him, his music resonates with the masses due to his perspective on his relationships, upbringing, and career. Whether he sings about his life goals on songs like "Couldn't Wait for It" and "Still Omw" or love and loyalty on "About You" and "Fake Love in LA," Blxst knows how to bring a specific type of cool to his music that keeps fans praising his sound.
