HBO has dropped the gripping first trailer for The Last of Us season 2.
The 2025-bound follow-up to 2023’s hit post-apocalyptic drama shows off an older, wearier-looking Joel (Pedro Pascal) as he travels a ruined North America with teenager Ellie (Bella Ramsey). It also introduces us to Abby (Kaitlyn Dever), who has a big role to play.
In the video games on which the show is based, Abby is responsible for splitting up the pair. The Last of Us Part II, which released on PS4 in 2020, casts her as both hero and villain, even letting you play as her at points. As such, she’s a divisive character.
“Godspeed to the person playing Abby…” writes @Xtermenator217 under the YouTube trailer. “I hope Kaitlyn Dever is prepared for the amount of negativity she is going to get, not just from gamers who already hate Abby but a whole new audience of tv viewers,” adds @BeautilAliceShaw-k6y.
Twitter users, meanwhile, are bracing themselves for a season of heavy emotional toil. After all, where the first season of the show is based on the first game, The Last of Us Season 2 is based on the game’s sequel, which features death and despair in abundance. Hey, at least The Last of Us season 2 will be shorter than the first season.
