For a character with such a loaded history and tragic origin, Taskmaster’s return in ‘Thunderbolts*’was expected to be a redemptive arc. The film was supposed to be a chance for Antonia Dreykov to reclaim her agency, her voice, and her value in a franchise that once robbed her of all three.
However, what audiences got was a cruel bait-and-switch: a brief appearance, a single line, and then a brutal, emotionless execution that served no real narrative purpose. Just like that, one of Marvel’s most intriguing anti-heroes was gunned down and tossed aside.
When Black Widow introduced Taskmaster, the reveal that the skull-masked mimic was actually Antonia added a new level of depth to the MCU’s depiction of villainy and trauma. Her release from the Red Room and her escape at the end of the film hinted at endless possibilities. So, what happens when someone like Antonia, shaped by years of cruelty and stripped of personal will, suddenly regains her freedom? What does redemption look like for a killer made, not born?
Apparently, Marvel Studios wasn’t interested in answering those questions. According to ‘Thunderbolts*’ screenwriter Eric Pearson, Taskmaster was originally given a “pretty big subplot” in his draft of the script. This storyline paired her with Ava Starr (Ghost), another character with a tragic, lab-grown past. Moreover, the idea of these two women, both victims of systemic manipulation, bonding and helping each other heal, could have added incredible emotional texture to the film.
Ghost mentoring Taskmaster in autonomy and survival would’ve deepened both characters. Even on the comedic side, there was a clever running gag involving Antonia’s memory loss and repetitive aggression toward U.S. Agent. Unfortunately, none of it made it to the screen. Not a frame. In addition, Antonia is killed off by Ghost in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment early in the film, without any remorse.
The most tragic part of Taskmaster’s death in ‘Thunderbolts*‘ isn’t just that she dies, it’s how little it matters. In a film full of morally complicated, damaged characters, the fact that no one really reacts to her demise speaks volumes. Ghost and U.S. Agent immediately loot her body for weapons like scavengers. Yelena offers a throwaway line about her hard life. And then the plot moves on. Antonia dies alone, unacknowledged, and unloved, which is not what she deserved.
It’s a disservice to a character who should have represented one of the most compelling emotional throughlines of the MCU’s post-Endgame era. Taskmaster, like Bucky Barnes before her, was a weapon created by others, forced to commit atrocities she didn’t choose. Her survival in Black Widow wasn’t just a hopeful ending, it was a promise. A promise that the MCU would explore what it means to unlearn violence.
Moreover, to add insult to injury, the film’s promotional material clearly positioned Taskmaster as a part of the Thunderbolts team. She appeared in team shots, posters, and early footage. It looked like she would play a significant role in the story. Instead, her inclusion was a shallow marketing trick. It didn’t have to be this way. Her character didn’t deserve a death that was treated as a shock factor.
