‘True Detective: Night Country’ Saved the Franchise

[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for True Detective: Night Country Season 4, Episode 6, “Part 6.”]

True Detective: Night Country was not only a great season of television, but also a rejuvenating entry for the HBO franchise itself as the series set its spotlight on detectives Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis).

Arriving ten years after its lauded first season starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, True Detective‘s fourth season (helmed by the talented Issa Lopez) breathes new life into the show after less satisfying second and third seasons. If you need cold hard proof, look no further than the ratings.

Night Country was certified fresh by Rotten Tomatoes where it received an overall critic score of 92 percent, compared to Season 1’s 91 percent, Season 2’s 47 percent, and Season 3’s 84 percent. For a second take on the season ratings, Metacritic‘s breakdown gives Season 1 87/100, Season 2 61/100, Season 3 72/100, and Season 4 81/100.

In both cases, Night Country is among one of the top seasons of the series overall, reaching a similar level of praise that Season 1 received. But further proof of the season’s vitalness to the series’ overall future is in the numbers as the audience made Night Country True Detective‘s most-watched season with an average of 12.7 million viewers per episode since the January 14 premiere.

While Night Country may not resonate with every viewer who felt more impacted by past seasons, it takes familiar elements and repackages them in a refreshing way that is tinged with supernatural motifs, the weight of trauma, and a larger message about the treatment of missing and murdered Indigenous women as well as the environment.

Additionally, Night Country serves up a satisfying conclusion, tying up most, if not all, major questions by the end of its sixth episode. The six-episode run was also shorter than prior seasons, giving it a slight advantage when it comes to delivering a more concise story. In the finale, truths are unearthed with a twist, not unlike Season 1’s killer groundskeeper Errol Childress (Glenn Fleshler).

Sure, the Tsalal scientists being responsible for Annie K’s (Nivi Pedersen) death wasn’t altogether surprising, but the cleaning ladies being responsible for the scientists’ demise? That’s a twist that was hinted at more than once throughout the season, but as Danvers would say, some viewers just weren’t asking the right questions.

When Danvers questions Bee (Diane Benson) in Episode 2 about any weird events at the Tsalal Research Station, the woman replies, “They never spoke to us. We’re just the cleanin’ ladies.” In most instances, when a character in a murder mystery uses the word “just” to describe themselves, it’s usually a marker of suspicion.

Additionally, when scientist Anders Lund (Þorsteinn Bachmann) wakes in the hospital, he tells Danvers and Navarro “She came for us,” but never elaborates who that “she” is. While we’re left to assume that it’s Annie’s ghost (and it very well could be), the remark serves as a red herring to their demise as they were left for dead in the cold by the cleaning ladies who sought revenge after uncovering the truth about Annie’s death through observations around the lab and police station.

It is through Raymond Clark’s (Owen McDonnell) confession and the women’s story that three major mysteries are unlocked. We understand who killed Annie K, who sent the scientists to their graves, and what was really going on with the mines and Tsalal as they conspired to raise pollution levels, harming the surrounding Indigenous community of Ennis for “the greater good.”

As for the supernaturalness of it all, Night Country‘s use of ghosts and apparitions lines up with the Indigenous angle of the season. As star Isabella Star LaBlanc, who plays Danvers’ stepdaughter Leah told us earlier in the season, “As an Indigenous person, all of the supernatural elements just feel so Native to me because of how I was raised with a belief that we don’t know everything. Not that we know that there are supernatural elements, but we just don’t have answers for everything. That’s what I kind of love about it.”

Regarding not knowing everything, there are two things left open to interpretation by the end of Night Country, which are how Annie’s tongue ended up at Tsalal Station, and what really happens to Navarro who goes “missing.” According to Lopez who spoke to the Los Angeles Times, there are two avenues one could follow to explain the tongue. In both situations, Hank (John Hawkes) cuts out the tongue, with the supernatural angle being that it disappears until the men at Tsalal are forced to face their fate.

The more rational version Lopez revealed involved Annie’s community finding her body before the police, collecting her tongue, and freezing it until it’s returned to Tsalal. “You can decide which one you believe,” Lopez stated.

With that mystery resolved by Lopez, Reis helped resolve Navarro’s ending when she spoke to us about the fate her character faces. “I love the editing so much because it’s so open-ended. But it still matches up with the same theme that has been kept on through the whole series from Episode 1, meaning you have your logical, rational, tangible solution that’s going to be shut and closed, and then you have the spiritual unknown and supernatural aspect of it. But it’s all suggestion,” Reis said. “You get to choose if she did follow in her sister’s footsteps.” And if Navarro did decide to walk into the sea like Julia (Aka Niviâna), Reis shared, “She’s finally done everything she has [to]… If she stayed, she was finally at peace.”

It’s a satisfying conclusion as Danvers and Navarro overcome the traumas that were weighing them down all season, reaching a sense of peace and stability akin to what Marty (Harrelson) and Rust (McConaughey) experience in Season 1’s conclusion. Not all hardship is resolved, but the darkness faced by all isn’t so dark anymore. This is literal for Danvers and Navarro as their story ends with daybreak after the long night of winter in Alaska.

One could argue that Night Country‘s overall message about the importance of recognizing marginalized Indigenous communities, their missing women, and the impact pollution is having in less publicized areas of the globe is a reminder that you can convey a lot with good television and storytelling.

If anything, Night Country raises the bar once again on a franchise that started so strongly in its first season, giving HBO and fans a reason to yearn for more. But what did you think? Can you change our minds?

Seventy players qualified for the first round of the playoffs at the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis, but only 69 will tee it up at TPC Southwind this week. That's because Rory McIlroy, who ranks second in the FedEx Cup standings behind only Scottie Scheffler, is skipping the first playoff event to prepare for the BMW Championship and Tour Championship. The PGA Tour isn't thrilled with his contentious decision. Peter Malnati, a PGA Tour pro and player director on the PGA Tour Policy Board, told Golfweek he's "very concerned" the new playoff format allows top players in the standings to skip playoff events. "I think there is stuff in the works, and I'll leave it at that," he said. The PGA Tour must make changes because McIlroy won't face any repercussions for skipping the FedEx St. Jude Championship. As the No. 2 player in the FedEx Cup standings entering the postseason, McIlroy is guaranteed to qualify for the Tour Championship. Before this year, he would've been incentivized to improve his spot in the standings because of the advantage the starting strokes format gave the No. 1 player. That's no longer the case. This year, the Tour Championship will operate like every other tournament on the PGA Tour schedule. There will be no starting strokes advantage for the top players, so every player from No. 1 to No. 30 will have an equal chance to win the $10 million prize. It doesn't matter where McIlroy resides in the standings. It just matters that he makes it to East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, and he's already locked up his spot in the season finale. Why spend a week in scorching-hot Memphis when you could stay home and prepare for the tournament that actually matters, right? The new playoff format will make the Tour Championship more entertaining for fans, but it renders the other two playoff events irrelevant for the PGA Tour's top players. The Tour must make playoff events mandatory to prevent other stars from following McIlroy's lead.

NFL Hall of Famer reveals why he chose to join Deion Sanders' Colorado coaching staff

Marshall Faulk is Colorado's new running backs coach, and the Buffaloes could not ask for someone with better experience for the job. That's, of course, because this is Faulk's first coaching gig. As a player, though, there were few better than the Pro Football Hall of Famer. In 12 seasons in the NFL, he rushed 2,836 times for 12,279 yards and 100 total touchdowns. He was a league MVP, a seven-time Pro Bowler and a Super Bowl champ. Faulk was the real deal, and now he has a chance to pass his experiences on to the running backs at Colorado. For him, it's more than just the opportunity to coach football, though. He gets to coach under Deion Sanders, whom he views as a major difference-maker for the game of football. "You guys know him in a different way than I know him," Faulk said in a recent media availability (h/t On3). "We’ve been friends for many years. We worked together in television. We always talk just about the game and probably more about kids coming up in the game. How do you affect and make sure they come into the game the right way? He’s one of those way makers. When you pay attention to kids that’s gonna leave this program and go to the next level, they’re gonna do it in a certain way and you’re gonna say, 'Wow, they were coached by a guy who understands how to get it done.' I identify with that." Colorado can certainly use Faulk's expertise heading into 2025. There are several players battling for the starting role after Isaiah Augustave transferred to South Carolina. Even then, he was Colorado's leading rusher last season while rushing for just 384 yards and four touchdowns, so it's not like the Buffs have a big gap that they're trying to replace. Dekalon Taylor transferred in from Incarnate Word, where he rushed for 909 yards and nine touchdowns last season, so he'll be a player to watch. Dallan Hayden, Micah Welch, Simeon Price and Charlie Offerdahl are also names to know. Faulk will have his work cut out for him, but he seems excited to make a difference both on and off the field for these young Buffaloes. "So coming here not just to win games on the field, but to win the game off the field, which is to make sure that these young men in life become what they want to become outside of football. They become the father that they want to be, the brother, the husband. Making sure that they do that, that’s the important part. That was attractive," he said.

Oilers' new signing ranked among NHL's worst contracts

Despite boasting a core of elite contracts that include Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and Zach Hyman, the Edmonton Oilers saw their overall contract value rankings take a hit in a recent article by The Athletic. Dom Luszczyszyn looks at every team and its contract situations each season. The Oilers ranked 8th overall, but that dropped them down the standings, largely due to the new eight-year, $3.9 million AAV deal handed to forward Trent Frederic. In a recent analysis evaluating NHL contract efficiency, Frederic’s deal earned a D-grade — one of the lowest marks handed out — alongside the much-maligned Darnell Nurse contract. He was signed to the new deal this offseason after arriving to the Oilers via a trade at the deadline. Injured, but in the lineup for the playoffs, he wasn’t exactly the most effective forward. The Oilers believe he has a lot more to give and GM Stan Bowman bet on the forward. Frederic’s extension, which carries a modest annual cap hit but stretches through 2033, is projected to offer just a +20.1% positive value while delivering a -$15.2 million total surplus over its duration. Frederic’s ranking is particularly glaring when placed next to the six A-grade contracts on the Oilers’ books. No other forward has a grade lower than a C. The team also has four different A-grades, an A for McDavid and an A+ for Draisaitl. Combined with team-friendly deals for stars like McDavid and Draisaitl, Edmonton remains one of the league’s most efficient teams in terms of contract value. Will the Oilers shed either of these bad contracts? According to this ranking, Frederic and Nurse deals are two glaring liabilities. Don’t expect the Oilers to move off either contract anytime soon. Bowman said of the Frederic deal: “…he’s a very unique player with the skillset that he has. He’s a big guy, he’s a physical player, he’s not afraid. He’s got that intimidation factor where he’ll go to the other team’s bench and challenge anybody, like stop messing around with our group. That’s something that I find, you either have that or you don’t. … And he’s scored, you know, he scored what, 18 goals twice in a row at a fairly young, younger age. So I think he’s got the game in him. And I think when you add all that up, it comes down to he’s a very unique player. It’s not like if we passed on Frederic, we’ll just go get so-and-so, who’s maybe a little different, but the same type of player. Not a lot of guys like that out there. They just aren’t anymore.” As for Nurse, there was talk that the Oilers approached him and others about their no-move clauses, and Nurse declined to waive his. The hope is that he elevates his game, and with the rising salary cap, his deal doesn’t look like such an albatross. With several key contracts set to expire soon — including McDavid’s — and questions lingering around term for others, the Oilers need to be cautious with long-term commitments. As it stands, the Frederic deal is a warning sign that not every extension is created equal, even on a Cup-contending roster.

Ex-Heat employee charged with selling stolen team items for millions in profit

A former Miami Heat employee has been accused of stealing more than 400 game-worn jerseys and other items and selling at least 100 of those items for profit, according to reports from The Athletic’s Brooks Peck and the Miami Herald’s Anthony Chiang and Charles Rabin. According to a Department of Justice press release, Marcos Thomas Perez faced federal charges of transporting and transferring stolen goods in interstate commerce on Tuesday. Among the items Perez allegedly stole was LeBron James’ jersey from Game 7 of the 2013 NBA Finals, which he sold for approximately $100K. The jersey was later sold in 2023 at a Sotheby’s auction for $3.68M. The federal investigation was launched in early 2024 after game-worn jerseys from James, Shaquille O’Neal and Dwyane Wade — among many other items — went missing from the Heat’s arena, the Kaseya Center. Perez worked for the City of Miami Police Department from November 1992 until he retired in April 2016. The Heat employed him as a security officer from 2016-21, then worked for the NBA as a security employee from 2022 until this year. According to the DOJ press release, “During his tenure, Perez worked on the game-day security detail at the Kaseya Center, where he was among a limited number of trusted individuals with access to a secured equipment room. This equipment room stored hundreds of game-worn jerseys and other memorabilia that the organization intended to display in a future Miami Heat museum. During his employment, Perez accessed the equipment room multiple times to steal over 400 game-worn jerseys and other items, which he then sold to various online marketplaces. Over a three-year period, Perez sold over 100 stolen items for approximately $2 million and shipped them across state lines, often for prices well below their market value.” Law enforcement executed a search warrant at Perez’s home in April and seized almost 300 items that the Heat confirmed had been stolen from their arena. Meadowlark Media’s Amin Elhassan first reported the news of the investigation on “The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz” last week, according to the Herald. The Heat organization and the league have declined to comment during the ongoing investigation.
