Russia's Anna Shcherbakova wins gold in women's figure skating, Kamila Valieva finishes fourth

A tumultuous week for Russia's Kamila Valieva came to a disappointing close on Thursday at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, as the 15-year-old failed to medal during the women's figure skating competition.

Following a failed drug test and ensuing doping scandal, Valieva was only cleared to compete on Monday. During the women's short program on Tuesday, the teenager finished in first place with a score of 82.16.

On Thursday however, fellow Russian Anna Shcherbakova -- who was second in the short program -- took the gold medal with a combined score of 255.95. Teammate Alexandra Trusova was second with a 251.73, while Kaori Sakamoto of Japan was third at 233.13.

According to The Athletic, Valieva "stumbled out of her triple axel and fell on two of her three quad jump attempts" to finish with a 224.09.
