Red Bull Racing and Christian Horner have parted ways after agreeing to terms on a severance deal. Horner spent more than 20 years with the team, building one of the most successful runs in F1 history.

The split followed a disappointing start to the 2025 season, combined with growing tension between different groups within Red Bull’s ownership structure.

Laurent Mekies has since taken over as team principal, and early signs suggest the transition is already making a positive impact.

Meanwhile, Horner has now settled his exit package and will be eligible to take another role in Formula 1 next season.

He reportedly gave up a large portion of his original settlement to reduce his gardening leave, and there are already teams in the paddock keeping an eye on his availability for next year.

The Daily Mail has provided further insight into Horner’s next steps following his departure from Red Bull.

The report indicates that Horner is eager to get back into the Formula 1 scene quickly and now has the resources to consider investing in a team.

He’s looking for a role similar to what Toto Wolff has at Mercedes, where he would have both managerial control and an ownership stake.

According to sources familiar with his plans, Haas, valued at around £807m, is being considered as a potential fit for Horner’s ambitions.

Horner and Red Bull spent more than 20 years together, achieving remarkable success along the way.

But after 14 championships, that relationship ended following the British Grand Prix earlier this year.

A mix of poor results throughout the 2025 F1 season and disputes among the team’s ownership group led to Horner’s exit.

He had previously enjoyed support from Red Bull’s Thai owners, even as the Austrian side pushed for a change. The appointment of Laurent Mekies has already shown early signs of progress.

Horner has now reached a settlement with Red Bull, clearing him to return to Formula 1 next season if he chooses.

To speed up his return, Horner agreed to give up millions in severance pay and is reportedly eyeing roles with a couple of teams already on the grid for next year.

Ahead of Cadillac’s first F1 season, Haas have one of the smaller operations on the grid. Despite that, Komatsu has managed solid performances so far, keeping them ahead of Alpine in ninth place in the standings.

The recent partnership between Haas and Toyota could give Horner more tools at his disposal if he were to take over. This would be key for anyone hoping to move them closer to mid-table contention.

Briatore took over as Alpine’s executive advisor last month and could bring major changes after his suspension from all FIA-sanctioned events expired earlier this year. Horner never ruled out joining another team after leaving Red Bull.

Would Haas suit Christian Horner as a return path to Formula 1?

During his tenure at Red Bull, Horner established a reputation for transforming a struggling team into consistent championship contenders.

When Red Bull took over from Jaguar before the 2005 season, the Ford-backed team had managed just two podium finishes in five years, both thanks to Eddie Irvine.

Within five years under Horner’s leadership, Red Bull had risen to second place in the Constructors’ Championship, with Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber both winning races.

This isn’t the first time Horner has been linked to Haas, but whether they have the resources to follow a similar path remains uncertain.

While his Red Bull severance package was significant, it doesn’t come close to what’s needed to build an F1 team into title contenders.

Time will tell if he can secure that backing as he works towards making his return to the sport.
