The Formula 1 world was excited to see Lewis Hamilton at the Mexico City Grand Prix, hoping he'd at least finish the race with a third podium place. However, things didn't go as planned for the British driver.
Hamilton received a 10-second time penalty for leaving the track while battling Max Verstappen. The incident stemmed from a wheel-to-wheel clash where Hamilton locked up, cut a corner at Turn 4, and rejoined the track ahead of Verstappen, a move the stewards deemed had given him an unfair advantage.
Ever since then, a fake video created by AI has been going viral all over the internet. The AI video displays the 40-year-old calling the F1 officials "ridiculous" for giving him the penalty.
In the fabricated clip titled 'Lewis Hamilton GOES OFF on FIA After Mexico GP Penalty,' the Ferrari driver is depicted as saying, "Well, here we go again. The FIA and I, the most toxic relationship in Formula 1 history."
"[Charles Leclerc] leaves the track and gains an advantage, no penalty. Verstappen pushes someone off the track, leaves the track himself, [and] gains an advantage, no penalty," the fake clip showcased.
"I leave the track for half a second, and suddenly it's like I've committed a federal crime. Boom, 10 seconds. At this point, I'm convinced they've got a special button in race control labelled Hamilton only. It's the red one they press whenever I breathe near the white line," further adding to the controversy.
At the time of writing, the fake AI clip had already garnered over 6,000 views and 50 comments in under four hours, and its reach continues to grow. Notably, the channel has over 1.1K subscribers and has often published such fabricated AI videos.
Setting the fake video aside, the Ferrari driver expressed a similar sentiment in his real response to the penalty. Hamilton was visibly frustrated after the decision, calling the penalty “kind of nuts,” as per Sky Sports.
He lamented that he was “the only one to get a ten-second penalty”, pointing out that other drivers who went off track, including Verstappen, did not face similar sanctions.
Reflecting on the battle, Hamilton defended his maneuver, noting, “It felt like racing … I was fine there, it was just the cutting."
The penalty ultimately dropped him out of podium contention and underscored a tense showdown in Mexico between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen.
