New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo suffered a gruesome leg injury in Week 8, but a recent update reveals that, all things considered, it could have been much worse.
On Wednesday, NFL insider Ian Rapoport shared that Skattebo, a 2025 fourth-round pick, underwent successful surgery and is expected to be healthy for the start of the team's organized team activities (OTAs) in May 2026.
"A horrific-looking injury, but not a complicated rehab," Rapoport wrote.
In addition to a dislocated ankle, Skattebo also suffered a fractured fibula and ruptured deltoid ligament. Despite the injury's severity, the breakout star running back should be full systems go by the start of the 2026 season, a promising development for the Giants.

Surgery was right away to close the wound, and it was a success. NYG expects him back for the offseason program. pic.twitter.com/rwk0DQaFRj
Cam Skattebo’s injury has a 4-6 month recovery, which means even at the very latest benchmark, the RB should be ready to roll for OTAs and minicamp. A horrific looking injury, but not a complicated rehab. https://t.co/VxGbPfBNPi

His availability during offseason workouts could be crucial to his development. With New York ranking among the league's worst at 2-6 and no signs of an in-season turnaround, fourth-year head coach Brian Daboll might be on borrowed time. Since a 2022 playoff run, Daboll's record is 11-31 over the past three seasons. If the Giants make a coaching change, Skattebo and the rest of the offense will need to learn a different scheme.
The former Arizona State Sun Devils running back has been one of the most exciting stories in football since his college days. He began at FCS Sacramento State before transferring to Arizona State in 2023. Skattebo finished fifth in Heisman Trophy voting as a senior last season, leading the Big 12 in rushing while leading the Sun Devils to a conference title and College Football Playoff quarterfinal appearance.
The traits that made him one of college football's best backs in 2024 translated to the pros and should allow him to rebound from his season-ending injury.
Per Pro Football Focus data, Skattebo gained 307 of his 410 rushing yards after contact and forced 22 missed tackles, tied for the 11th most among NFL running backs through Week 8. Even if he loses a step as a runner, his tackle-breaking ability should still make him an asset in the run game for seasons to come.
While the Giants aren't ready to contend in 2025, with the right moves this offseason and rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart taking a second-year leap, they could compete for a wild-card spot next season. And instead of watching from the sideline, which seemed possible after his scary injury, Skattebo will be along for the ride.
