Max Verstappen became the center of the Formula 1 driver market earlier this year. Rumors emerged that the reigning world champion was keen to leave Red Bull by the end of the season amid struggles at Milton Keynes. While some reports claimed that Verstappen was moving to Mercedes, the 27-year-old decided to stick to the Austrian team. Now, Red Bull Motorsport Consultant Dr. Helmut Marko has revealed that Verstappen could’ve easily used his exit clause if he wanted to join the Silver Arrows.

The four-time world champion has a contract with Red Bull till the end of the 2028 season. Previously, Helmut Marko has accepted that there is an exit clause in this deal. This would allow Max Verstappen to leave Milton Keynes based on certain championship criteria. It is widely believed that this is activated if Verstappen falls below second place in the standings.

However, Max Verstappen decided to put an end to all rumors surrounding a move to Mercedes. The reigning world champion made it clear that was happy with Red Bull and wanted to see his entire career at Milton Keynes.

Helmut Marko recalled Verstappen’s recent comments. The 82-year-old pointed out that the statements proved that the Dutch driver didn’t want to leave the team. Moreover, Marko accepted that Max Verstappen could’ve easily used the exit clause as it could’ve been activated. Though, he did not specify the criteria behind it.

From his statements it was clear that he wanted to stay, and it makes sense, even if the exit clause had become actionable.

Helmut Marko said on F1-Insider podcast

The Red Bull advisor insisted that 2026 remains a big unknown for everyone in Formula 1. The new regulations will be the ultimate test for every team. While Mercedes is rumored to be the best when it comes to the new power units, Helmut Marko pointed out that there was no real proof behind such claims.

No one knows what the situation will look like in 2026. On the engine side, Mercedes declare themselves the class leader, but there is no proof.

Helmut Marko added

Max Verstappen ‘important’ member for Red Bull

The Dutch driver first raced for Milton Keynes at the 2016 Spanish GP, when he became the youngest race winner in F1 history. Ever since, Max Verstappen has established himself as a key pillar at Milton Keynes. After Daniel Ricciardo‘s exit in 2018, Verstappen has been the leading Red Bull at the front with none of his teammates even coming close in terms of performance.

Helmut Marko recognized the influence the 27-year-old has had at Milton Keynes. The Red Bull advisor highlighted that all the success Max Verstappen has achieved in Formula 1 has come only in Red Bull machinery. Though, Marko accepted that the Dutch driver has even pushed himself beyond the limit during these times. He insisted that Verstappen remained a very important family member to the energy drinks giant.

Max is a very important part of our team. He has achieved his successes with Red Bull Racing; in his Formula 1 career he has only ever driven Red Bull cars, and beyond his driving potential he is simply a very important family member for us.

Helmut Marko stated

Certainly, Red Bull needs Max Verstappen, perhaps more than the other way around. The Dutch driver has been the one outdriving the car and getting the best possible results. If Verstappen were to leave, Milton Keynes could see an even more shocking slump in performance. Thus, Marko and the crew would be happy to see Verstappen continue this partnership next season.
