McLaren was one of the teams that lost out massively at the Las Vegas GP following their double disqualification. Lando Norris achieved a great lead in the driver’s title standings following a podium finish in Las Vegas. However, the disqualification now means that he is leading the campaign with just 24 points and can lose the title. As such, Max Verstappen‘s father, Jos Verstappen, opens up on Woking’s big blunder at Sin City.
Max Verstappen is certainly one of the biggest threats to Lando Norris in the title fight this year. The Dutchman was at one point over 100 points behind in the championship fight. However, his sudden performance resurgence has helped him regain the lost points at the beginning of the season. Now, Jos Verstappen, who is definitely excited for his son’s championship chances this year, has talked about McLaren’s shortcomings recently.
Speaking about the double disqualification due to excessive plank wear on both McLaren challengers, Jos Verstappen commented that it was indeed a huge mistake by the team. He continued that pushing to the extra limit in this manner was a big blunder committed by them, especially at such a stage in the championship fight.
Though the team showed class and apologized to both Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, it still did not make up for the lost points. Jos Verstappen further speculated that the team might have resorted to these tactics as they couldn’t outperform the rivals without the fishy tactics. Regardless of the outcomes, Norris’ life is made even harder in the championship fight despite his winning chances looking very strong.
This is a huge mistake by McLaren, a huge blunder indeed. Because why would they really push the limit like that? Maybe it really was a mistake, but maybe the car simply wouldn’t perform as well otherwise, and they’d have to do this.
Jos Verstappen told Formule1.nl.
Max Verstappen ran at the front of the pecking order the entire race and brought home a stellar race win. However, the Dutchman still reportedly was aware of the unfair tactics that McLaren might have used in the race. Jos Verstappen recalled the journey back home after the Las Vegas GP and how Verstappen Jr. already knew that Woking might suffer from a DNF.
Jos Verstappen recalled the events of the Las Vegas GP and claimed that McLaren’s radio comments to attack Max Verstappen on track only fueled his motivation further. Verstappen Sr. added that the team will only get more nervous from this point forward and cannot afford any more mistakes. Moreover, the 53-year-old recalled that Verstappen Jr. was aware of the disqualification much before the official announcement.
This just gives Max extra positive energy, Just hearing and reading about the effect McLaren’s radio comment during the race – ‘Go and get Max’ – has on Max, you can imagine it’s an added motivation. And McLaren will only get more nervous. They can’t afford anything more now. I spoke to Max briefly before leaving. He already knew they were going to be disqualified.
Jos Verstappen noted.
The driver’s title battle is far from over, although the 2025 season is just two races away from completion. Certainly, it will be one of the greatest title comebacks in the history of Formula 1 if Max Verstappen manages to win it from this point on. For now, Verstappen will aim to take the two races slowly and not rush into things, and keep it cool and level-headed on track.
