  • The McLaren driver responds with a humble acknowledgement.
  • The moment captures mutual respect between two generations of racers.

With the F1 championship fight intensifying, few drivers know the pressure better than Lewis Hamilton, a seven-time world champion who’s lived and thrived under it. When asked on Thursday if he had any advice for McLaren’s Oscar Piastri as he battles at the sharp end of the grid, Hamilton’s response was short, sharp, and utterly fitting for a driver of his caliber.

“Don’t give back any more positions,” Hamilton quipped

Hamilton’s advice may reference the Italian GP earlier this season, when team orders forced Piastri to give up his position to Norris.

It was classic Hamilton direct yet loaded with meaning. In a sport where every overtaking maneuver, pit call, and defensive line can define a race, the advice resonated with the wisdom of a veteran who has spent nearly two decades mastering the margins.

Oscar Piastri’s Awkward but Honest Response

A journalist later relayed Hamilton’s words to Oscar Piastri, prompting an awkward but genuine smile from the young Australian. His reply was as humble as it was respectful.

‘He’s been in that position many times,” Piastri said with a grin. “I accept the advice.”

The exchange was lighthearted, but beneath it lay a shared understanding, one that only racers at the top level can truly grasp. Piastri, now deep in the title conversation, is facing the kind of mental and strategic demands Hamilton has navigated for years.

From Rookie to Contender

Since his rookie debut, Piastri has impressed fans and pundits alike with his composure, precision and calm demeanour. His recent performances against Red Bull and Mercedes have shown a driver capable of handling immense pressure without losing his cool, traits Hamilton himself was once praised for during his early McLaren years.

Hamilton’s advice, while playful, carries a deeper message: in championship battles, confidence and conviction are everything. The moment you second-guess yourself or hesitate, even to be “too fair”, you risk losing what you’ve worked so hard to gain.
