Max Verstappen tells Red Bull one key British Grand Prix call left his car ‘undriveable’

Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen won’t have many fond memories from the 2025 British Grand Prix.

He’s only won this race once, back in his dominant 2023 campaign, and historically, Silverstone has been a stronghold for Lewis Hamilton, though neither driver made the podium this time around.

This year, Verstappen managed to put his Red Bull on pole, drawing level with Sebastian Vettel’s pole record for Christian Horner’s team, but he quickly found himself in trouble during the opening stages of the race.

Red Bull had opted for a low-downforce setup to maximise qualifying performance, but a late weather shift made that decision costly. Verstappen found himself struggling for grip as conditions worsened.

He voiced his frustration over the team radio: “This car is just undriveable, f***. I have way too much front wing!” Later he added: “I just have no rear downforce,” continuing: “I can’t even stay with them. I’m so slow.”

One incident under the safety car nearly compounded the problem – Verstappen spun before the race resumed, costing him further ground and leaving him outside the podium places, as he finished fifth.

“That was really tough, really difficult. But, uh, yeah… Yesterday it was alright, but today was just… really difficult,” he said after the race.

What Christian Horner said after another disappointing Max Verstappen result

Verstappen’s form has highlighted the growing significance of his role within Red Bull – without his points haul, the team would be sitting at the bottom of the constructors’ standings this season.

With Yuki Tsunoda yet to establish himself and the complaints from the Dutch star about the car’s decline, Team Principal Christian Horner is under fire. Right now, there is a lot of speculation about his future.

Speaking after the race, Verstappen addressed the challenges: “Today wasn’t great. We didn’t think it was going to be so wet today; the weather forecast overnight changed, and it was not in our favour, so it was really difficult with the rear wing that we had today.

“Every time we were low on downforce and couldn’t balance it out in the high and low speeds, with the tools that we had.

“Of course, I had the spin, and we lost a lot of positions at the restart. I don’t really know what happened as I tried to go on the throttle, but we recovered it as much as we could to get to P5.

“Even after that happened, I continued, and the car had no pace, which wasn’t great.”
