McLaren finds itself in a difficult spot this season. The Woking-based squad now has the fastest car on the grid with Lando Norris in prime position to challenge Max Verstappen . However, Oscar Piastri has not given up on his title hopes. As such, the team needs to decide if it will implement team orders to support Norris.
McLaren team boss Andrea Stella previously hinted at backing Norris’ title bid. Alhough, Oscar Piastri refused to comment on such a possibility after the Italian GP. Even Red Bull team boss Christian Horner highlighted that the Woking-based team can’t win if they don’t start focusing on one driver.
Now, Andrea Stella has asserted that Piastri is the future of the team. As such, the McLaren boss insisted that the Australian driver must give his support to Norris in the right situations. Moreover, Stella claimed that this support would be an investment for Oscar Piastri’s long-term future with the team.
The future is Oscar, and he needs to make sure that when it is the time to support, the support he will give to the team or to Lando is an investment. Andrea Stella told RacingNews365
McLaren allowed its drivers to race at the Italian GP in accordance with its ‘Papaya rules.’ Andrea Stella reckoned that the Woking-based team wanted to stay open and transparent regarding its driver management to make sure that fans understand the process. Although, Stella highlighted that the team would keep some confidentiality to itself as well.
We want to be open, we want to be transparent, give everyone some sort of understanding of what is going on, but we want to retain some sort of confidentiality for ourselves. Andrea Stella explained
Certainly, McLaren needs to find a solution to its current dilemma. The British team needs to make Piastri understand its driver situation and how helping Norris would be the best way out in the title fight. However, it remains to be seen how things pan out in the next race in Baku.
