Zhou Guanyu reveals contract priorities in Sauber negotiations

Zhou Guanyu is very clear about his contract objectives this year. The 24-year-old is entering a critical phase of his F1 career and is eager to explore all available options. Just weeks after Audi accelerated its buyout of Sauber, Zhou must ensure he is part of the team’s future plans.

The Swiss outfit is currently amidst a transitional phase, which was cemented over winter by the team’s sponsorship agreement with Kick. This title sponsorship largely serves to bridge the gap between Alfa Romeo’s departure and Audi’s arrival.

However, although the 2026 season is two years away, the German brand is establishing its direction for the Hinwil-based team. The team’s driver lineup is a key area where Audi is likely to assert the most influence in the foreseeable future.

From a technical standpoint, the lion’s share of their resources will be directed to engine development. In the meantime, Sauber will continue to work on the aerodynamic side of operations.

Still, Zhou Guanyu and Valtteri Bottas are on expiring contracts. Considering F1’s current landscape, teams are working to solidify their driver line-ups and identities in the coming months. It is rare that so many drivers are available to sign as they are currently.

With this in mind, Zhou must perform. Several drivers on the market are already established as desirable targets for Audi. In this context, strong performances will be necessary to keep his place in the team.

However, the Chinese driver must also consider options elsewhere. After all, there is no guarantee Sauber wants to retain his services for 2025 and beyond.

Zhou Guanyu sets clear driver market approach

Zhou is aware of the delicate nature of his situation, explaining that all eventualities must be considered.

“It’s not an absolute must, but it will be a priority for me to get a longer contract – that’s for sure,” motorsport-total quotes him as saying.

“I just have to concentrate on my work now. And I think that my manager, is already starting the discussions.

“And it’s clear that there are a lot of drivers who will no longer have a contract at the end of the season, so you have to start looking at all options.

“I would of course be happy to stay here, especially if Audi comes, but I’m also open to all other options because for me it’s about seeing what’s best for my future.

“I’d like a longer one I think after three years on a one-year contract it will help me a lot to get along with the team.”

Like many drivers, a long-term deal is his priority. Teammate Valtteri Bottas has discussed the importance of a multi-year agreement on multiple occasions. This was one of the more attractive aspects of Sauber’s offer to him in 2021.

Still, Zhou correctly identifies that a long-term agreement in F1 is a luxury – not a necessity. The priority will be staying on the grid by whatever means necessary.

When the first 2025 contracts are announced later this year, Zhou’s place in the transfer market will become clearer.
