A new study shows that university students in the United Kingdom are cheating at a huge rate using one particular method.

The benefits of the advancements in technology are plentiful, but they also come with no shortage of down sides. That's something we're currently seeing at universities in the United Kingdom.

According to Michael Goodier of The Guardian, a survey recently showed that an alarming number of university students were caught cheating between 2023 and 2024.

But the study, which found nearly 7,000 proven cases of cheating, didn't focus on traditional methods. Instead, it focused on one of the newest methods at students' disposal.

That method is the use of artificial intelligence, and more specifically, ChatGPT.

The almost 7,000 proven cases of cheating using AI amounted to a rate of 5.1 students per 1,000, which was up a whopping 1.6 per 1,000 from 2022-23, the Guardian learned.

The estimation is that rate will again jump, from 5.1 per to 7.5 per, which is an even bigger increase than the previous one.

While that is an astounding number, experts believe that it could be much higher because many students simply aren't caught.

Co-author of the aforementioned study, University of Reading associate professor of psychology Dr. Pete Scarfe, thinks the known numbers are just the "tip of the iceberg."

Another survey done by the Higher Education Policy Institute found that 88% of students used AI for assessments.

The University of Reading tested its own detection system for assessments and found that AI-generated content went undetected 94% of the time.
