Pressure around the USMNT is growing as the World Cup approaches, but Alexi Lalas clearly has little sympathy for players feeling overwhelmed by expectations.

The former defender, who played for the United States during the 1994 World Cup on home soil, didn't go easy on the players when discussing the current squad and the pressure surrounding the tournament.

“If they’re whining about pressure playing in a World Cup then we’ve already lost.”

Lalas argues that today’s generation of U.S. players has more support, resources, and opportunities than any group before them. “So I don’t think that I’m being unrealistic, I don’t think I’m being unfair by saying that we should expect more from this group, we should expect this team to win this group.”

“Cry me a river, when it comes to the pressure,” Lalas said.

“A bunch of whiners. If they’re whining about pressure playing in a World Cup then we’ve already lost.”

Lalas Believes This USMNT Generation Must Deliver

Lalas’s words reveal the expectations around this current U.S. squad. With many players competing in Europe’s top leagues and the World Cup being played at home, there's increasing belief that this team should go further than previous American squads.

The former USMNT star pointed to the opportunities this generation has received compared to earlier eras. In his eyes, that comes with responsibility, especially in a home tournament where expectations from fans will naturally rise.

“And when they win that group, they will go to this new Round of 32 and in that moment, they will be playing a team that, for the most part, people believe we are better than."

“As a nation should expect more from these young men in terms of the talent that they have, and I wouldn’t say that if I didn’t believe that they could live up to it."

“So whatever pressure they feel, tough!”

Lalas knows firsthand what a home World Cup feels like. He was part of the U.S. team that famously defeated Colombia during the 1994 tournament before eventually losing 1-0 to eventual champions Brazil in the knockout stage.

Now, he believes the current group has enough talent to achieve something even bigger.

Whether fans agree with his tough-love approach or not, Lalas expects this USMNT team to embrace the pressure, not fear it.
